Metal Gear Solid: Quiet

For the record, I've never played Metal Gear Solid, so this was new territory for me. Regardless, a commission is a commission. Etched on 11 x 14" Etson with mixed media, here is my representation of the character Quiet. This has been one of the most challenging projects to date for me. I took some creative liberty and increased the size of her rifle and threw in a classic pistol in her other hand. I also used Verithin Prismacolor Hard Lead brown to enhance the shadows on her face to make it more natural. The background is another major character from Metal Gear, which I defined with Prismacolor hard lead black. Admittedly the challenge in this rendering were in her slacks, knowing how much pea green and moss tones went where. I also went in again with hard lead to enhance the edge of the moss areas, which represented shadows. It was also meant to establish that this was not leather, but rather a worn spandex since the tears indicates battle damage. For the top and the bikini bottom over the slacks I didn't want to use leather since the majority would be on the right arm, so I opted for a cool gray and shading that was of regular material. For her army boots, I actually used MY steel toes for the patterns to make them stand out a little. The yellow areas on the shoe laces and the stitching was meant to create depth and texture. All in all, a successful project and experiment in negative space with the background image.
