DescriptionA little later Winnie Winkle from 1924, just 4 years into the strip. I got this one because the building was so much fun. Although Winnie sports a flapper look, she was far from the wild lifestyle of the classic flapper. Winnie had to work to support her parents and adopted brother. I recently became more interested in the flapper and flapper like characters in comic strips after having written an article about it for CFA-APA. It is an incredibly interesting time and a culmination of many social changes including the end of WW1, end of the Spanish flu, women's voting rights and urbanization of the population. These early comic strips from the golden age of the newspaper were so intertwined with culture and society and deserve a lot more attention.Social/Sharing |
