DescriptionHadn’t posted any BP pieces in 2021 yet but y’all knew I’d get around to it :) Starting out with some ‘90s goodness with this sweet Frenz/Milgrom page from Thunderstrike, and though this may be said character’s book, this page is ALL Panther.Loved it right when I saw it, and luckily for me fellow CAFer Marvel Fanfare (thank you, sir!) was ready to move it recently. Got the Panther in every panel with large shots in 3 of 4, including a running, near full figure. Also got nice images of ‘Strike (I like the way Black Widow calls him that) and the Widow up top. Definitely a lot of bang for my BP buck with this one. The capper’s that last panel. A nice close-up Panther shot for sure and striking with those eyes! I also dug the sheer amount of black ink on the page. I mean, if there’s a character that it works for… :) And it’s cool to see Frenz’s notes, in red, to inker Milgrom and the colorist at the top and sides. Also, thanks duke fleed for the heads up! I didn’t necessarily plan on having Frenz be part of the BP artist checklist but I’m more than glad to simultaneously add and check him off with this beaut! 5/6/21 UPDATE - a couple of folks have noted the John Buscema look in that last panel, Carlo M being one of them. And he actually just let me know that it's the same panel from Avengers #52! Included a pic in the additional images. JB look, indeed. Thanks, Carlo! Social/Sharing |

That's Gold, Jerry! Gold!
1st Appearance of Jerry Seinfeld in a comic book! (Cameo Only, mentioned in word balloon). This has to be worth at least $5,000 now!
As a bonus, you get the beautiful chiaroscuro work, which is rarely found on Ron Frenz pages. Kudos, Kahlil!

Hey, I agree - his name IS there, right?! That's an appearance in my book. Got no problem with stretchin' a little bit there lol. AT LEAST $5K :) And yeah, I didn't think I'd seen many Frenz pages at all with so much black, but the rare combo of character and setting definitely provided the in. Thanks, Ruben and Marcus, and all, for the comments!

I just have to add (I can't resist!), the final panel is GORGEOUS! So killer!

The headlamps! Oh man this has hardcore 90’s vibes. Great pick up, KG.

Killer panel pages throughout of Tchalla. Hard to pick my favorite. Congrats K

I was contemplating it ;)
The heavy use of shadows really works well for BP and his crouched poses are fun as well.
Great page.

Congrats, K, on this awesome score! It's such an all-around fun example of an original comic page with both the cool 'behind the scenes' element of the red ink notes at top and sides and the great 'front of the camera' fun of seeing four awesome panels of these heroes (add my vote to the 'panel four rules!' contingent)... And (just as you point out) even though it's from Thunderstrike's book there's no question of who this page really belongs to. I love - LOVE - all the black here; it adds so much weight to the moment (quite probably literally; they must have used a whole bottle!) and is the antithesis of what you normally think of when you think of "90's comics". And I'm always a sucker for the striped Kirby gloves! A gem of a page! Congrats!

So many good points. And I may have to go lift the page up again to see if it's heavier than the average one, lol! I do hear what you're saying about '90s antithesis - sometimes, like here, the less number of lines the better. EXCEPT for the gloves :) I always liked that design element, too. Was a "simple" way to break up the otherwise sleek/streamlined costume. You can see how they pop here, particularly in that last panel! Thanks, Jason!

since original art is only black and white- I love it when the background is painted in- and with black panther here - especially in the final panel - love the technique where he fades into the darkness. A technique pioneered by Coles Phillip in the early 1900s with what later became known as the fade away girl. At any rate - Frenz was the first comic artist I ever met and as a critical artist on amazing spiderman has always been a nostalgic favorite. His art here is solid and very appealing. Watch out for shape edges!

Good point around the painted in background with the Panther being in the foreground and the effect it creates. And Coles Philip - news to me! But I always like learning :) Totally agree on Frenz and ASM. I'm still on the hunt for a page myself...I'll get there. The art and nonstalgia combo will not allow me to fail! Thanks, duke, for the comment AND the art history lesson :)

Frenz is a solid artist, especially when backed by a strong inker. The last panel has a John Buscema ring to it.....The inks steal the show here, fantastic! Very nice pick-up, you definitely have good taste.

I mean...if you say so, Carlo ;) Seriously, thanks for commenting. I see what you're saying in terms of the JB influence in the last panel...good callout. I definitely think Frenz/Milgrom were a premier penciller/inker duo of the time!

Heh, as soon as I saw this page, I thought "this goes to Kahlil." KAH-THOOM! That's your "I got awesome BP art" onomatopoeia. ;) I love how Black Panther totally steals the scene from Thunderstrike in his own book. All the ink means it's his page, dude! And that last panel is reminiscent of JB style from that first run. Very nice score! Congrats!

KAH-THOOM...I can dig it! Sorry 'Strike - if BP's on the page, the more ink there is on it, the more it's his. Just how it goes, man :) And you're the second, after Carlo, to mention the JB influence in that last panel. I didn't catch that initially but definitely see it now! Thanks!

Amazing how an artistic team can make the Black Panther still stand out against a black background. Just amazing to me, and a tribute to Al Milgrom's inking talents. And Ron Frenz can do no wrong. I love him on any title. Really love this page. Those eyes in the last panel are mesmerizing! Congrats!!

This is such an awesome Black Panther to have in such an unassuming title. I'm loving all the blacks on this page!

I got into Thor as a kid during Defalco & Frenz’s Thor run with Eric Masterson so Thunderstrike is right up my alley! The sheer 90’s audacity of that design (that lightning bolt earring!) - and the jacket upgraded to a full-blown trench coat here too! If you want classic comic power, you can’t go wrong with Frenz...congrats on a great page, man!

By Odin's bristling beard: a page with one of the most useless Marvel characters ever (b.movie Thor "Eric Masterson", not the BP :) ) AND a stolen Big John B. panel - what a shame to comic ANY art collection :) By the way: if you answer this comment in your gallery ("stretching" the comment quantity which only "villains" do more than one time per CAF entry) - the "Masters of Evil will come to your house by noon and get you, so don't be tempted :)

Mayhaps I will join the Master's of Evil! I've been creeping towards the dark side anyway...and responding to your comment here may just just "stretch" me there :) As I write this, 1 out of 6 comments here are me...not too crazy. I best ramp that up! Thunderstrike...'90s, baby, '90s. And isn't it cool that I've got JB on this page?! ;) Thanks, man!

Frenz would often pay tribute to the masters by incorporating a panel almost exactly like one that appeared in the early Marvel books. I reacently saw this when Heritage had Thor #158 page 2 up for auction earlier this year. The top two panels of Thor landing and stopping himself by catching the roof with his hammer was incorporated in Thor #402 page 3. Check it out!

Just looked and definitely saw it - thanks for pointing out! Wasn't sure if this was something Frenz commonly did!
