Description

Steranko! Among comic fans, the name conjures up ‘60s psychedelia, pop art, and surrealism against a background of espionage thrillers like “I Spy,” “The Avengers,” “The Man from UNCLE,” and the James Bond film series. Jim Steranko has had a fascinating life outside of comics which included being a musician, illusionist and escape artist, writer, publisher, and film artist for movies like “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Within the comic industry, his work broke new ground. Following Jack “The King” Kirby on the series Strange Tales, Steranko would illustrate and eventually write the adventures of Marvel’s super-spy, Nick Fury. Nick Fury was a previous war veteran who was now an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s top secret government spy agency. Prior to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen, Nick Fury made it to the small screen in a 1998 television movie played by actor David Hasselhoff. As for Fury’s comic roots, the popularity of Steranko’s work on Strange Tales allowed its premier spy to get his own title, “Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (1968). I remember reading issue number one, entitled “Who is Scorpio?”, in the fifth grade, and although I couldn’t put my finger on it, I could tell there was something different about his style that was unlike anything else out at the time. Steranko would work in comics for a few more years before moving on to other endeavors, like advertising, publishing, and film. But even to this day, Jim Steranko is fondly remembered by fans. A few years ago, I got to see him at a Tampa Bay Comic Con. Of course, the line was too long to go up to him, nor would I have known what to say. But from a distance, I saw this man of what appeared to be an average height, dressed very sharply all in black, with bronze tanned skin, dark sunglasses, and a full head of flowing white hair. It was like glimpsing a rock star! Recently, a good friend of mind said my work reminds him of Jim Steranko’s style. Personally, I didn’t see the comparison, since I am always trying to emulate George Perez. But I will take a compliment anywhere I can get it. So, here are my thoughts and “tribute” to Jim Steranko, with visual references to “Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” #1 and “Strange Tales” #167. Included are a whole host of friends and foes from his spy days and his adventures during the many wars he served in. Enjoy!
