DescriptionI remember when I first reached out to Duncan about this art, he thought he had it somewhere in his stacks of art, but wasn't sure. After about a year and half of correspondence, I finally got the email:"Jeremy… Are you sitting down? Relaxed? … Good. I found the cover! I even found the sketches again, after another half an hours sorting. Good grief!!" The promo comic itself is one of the rarest comics out there. Only 100 copies were produced, and the comic tells a canon origin story for Calypso, the infamous villain of Twisted Metal. Several were distributed as prizes for a magazine contest, and unfortunately, only a few have survived to this day. Notably, the comic features a depiction of the World Trade Center's destruction, occurring five years prior to the actual event. Duncan Fegredo's wild and semi-cubist approach to the cover art serves to illustrate Calypso's insidious and demonic nature, a twisted genie who is able to grant any wish (often with dark and ironic consequences) to the winner of the Twisted Metal contest. He did so many sketches for the AD, he was already sick of the project by the time he got to the cover! Social/Sharing |

Fegredo's line looks wild and improvised, but the covers like this are very well designed with so many details that are surprising.

I agree! It's very free and cubist in a way. He included a set of a large number of prelims and from the notes that appear on them, it took quite a few attempts at getting the composition of the cover right. He mentions that, rate and a half or not, he was sick of Twisted Metal, haha.
