Description

“We were better off dead”

This heartbreaking conclusion to Jean’s resurrection and coming back into the X-Men fold, after officially being away since X-Men #150 when Magneto gave her brain a big magnetic pulse/hemorrhage (which then results in Wolverine going into his berserker rage and beheading Xorn/Magneto, see my X-Men #150 page).

Jean faces off with the Phoenix Force and ultimately has to choose death to even those she loves most, Scott Summers. At this point in comics both Scott and Jean are dead (Scott dying from the Terrigen Mist conflict with the Inhumans, IVX), Jean is resurrected by the Phoenix Force, who offers a world where she can live on with all her loved ones, most especially Scott Summers, but must combine with the Force in order to have him back. She ultimately declines, kisses Scott one last time, profess their love for each other and the Phoenix Force takes back his life force. In a reversal, Jean is holding the life of Scott as he dies (turning to a lifeless husk), compared to the original Dark Phoenix Saga.

This page captures it all so beautifully. Bennett does an X-cellent job showcasing the unending love between these two (Jean and Scott) and the rage between Jean and the Phoenix Force.

Bennett uses the entire wide panel to have us focus on the emotion of the scene.  Every panel has that delicate touch.

Heavy-duty impact on this page! Artistically, I'm digging the stylized flowing hair on Jean.
