DescriptionGeorge Perez and “The Mark of the Man-Wolf”! I grew up on a steady diet of “Famous Monsters” magazine, “Creature Feature,” and “Shock Theater.” At the time, my favorite “monster” was the legendary Werewolf or Wolf Man. I was into all things Lon Chaney Jr. and Oliver Reed. I had Warren Zevon on the radio and on the big screen, such modern classics as “An American Werewolf in London,” “The Howling,” and “Wolfen.” Sometime during this period, I heard the radio play “Mark of the Man-Wolf” on Power Records, which was an adaptation of the comic books Amazing Spider-Man #124 and #125. It told the tragic tale of Spider-Man battling a werewolf, who, unbeknownst to Spidey, was later revealed to be one of his friends. I was hooked! Like Morbius, the Living Vampire, before him, the Man-Wolf was a modern take on a classic monster. Both villains would be long-time foes of the amazing Spider-Man for years to come. Like Morbius, the Man-Wolf’s popularity led him to star as an anti-hero in his own series in the comic “Creatures on the Loose.” Unfortunately, as I tracked down back issues of “Creatures on the Loose,” I discovered it was cancelled with issue #37 (Sept. 1975). It left me wanting more Man-Wolf….literally! You see, the issue ends with the Man-Wolf being sent into outer space. The cliffhanger states that you have to read the next issue to find out his fate. But there was no next issue…or so I thought. In December of ’78, almost three years later, in the pages of Marvel Premiere #45 and 46, the Man-Wolf’s story was completed. Apparently, after being in space for a while, he landed on a strange planet, gained intelligence, donned a battle suit, and was christened the “Stargod.” Fast forward through many years of comic books and collecting. My favorite comic artist became George Perez for his work on such multi-character books as the “Justice League of America,” the “Avengers,” the “Fantastic Four,” and the industry changing “Crisis on Infinite Earths” among other things. Eventually, I put two and two together and discovered that my favorite artist was also the artist who drew those early stories of the Man-Wolf in “Creatures on the Loose” and the concluding “Stargod” saga. In fact, looking at the design of the Stargod suit, it is pure George Perez with many intricate details and ornamentation. As time passed in comics, the Man-Wolf returned to Earth, but on a few occasions made it back to space where he assumed his Stargod identity, most notably in the pages of “Savage She-Hulk” #13-14 (1981). So, with this mock “Marvel Team-Up” cover, I thought it would be interesting to have the Man-Wolf fight side-by-side with Spider-Man, instead of against him, and in his Stargod battle suit. I included the She-Hulk because of the Man-Wolf’s many appearances with her. Finally, I felt it would also be great if the Man-Wolf interacted with another feature that appealed to my monster interest and that also appeared in Marvel Premiere, The Legion of Monsters! The Legion of Monsters first appeared in Marvel Premiere #28 (Feb. 1976) and featured Werewolf by Night, Morbius, Ghost Rider, and Man-Thing. The “Legion’s” ranks would change over the years, but this first appearance made quite an impression on a young monster fan! Enjoy!Social/Sharing |
