DescriptionOver-the-top commission in classic Bart Sears style on DC cover stock. Perhaps intended to be a cover, but never published. The top right portion of the art is a patch where Sears redrew Batman's left arm. The patch is hinged on top of the original art with artist's tape and is not glued down. The original version of the left arm can be seen in the additional pic. Interesting insight to the creative process and how the change was made. The hulking muscles... the impossible anatomy... if a modern artist drew Batman like this I would run away... but since it is by Bart Sears I'd expect nothing less and it immediately reminds me why I loved Sears' art so much back in the '90s. Still love it now for that cheesy nostalgia factor. Social/Sharing |

I prefer it without the patch. The new arm would have made sense in real life for the figure to balance, but Batman has so many mucles, I think he would topple over anyways. This brute of a Batman by Sears is muscle bound like many of his creations, but it is a rare treat to see the Joker by him who isn't jacked up.

Agreed. The Joker is the star of the piece in many ways. Such a great version! But even the jacked-up, muscular Batman oozes Sears to me and is indeed reminiscent of Brute and many of Sears' other works.

This one is asking for a "Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight" trade dress! Nice pickup!

Ha! Sweet! I saw this when it popped up for sale. I was excited, I was actually going to bid on it, then it disappeared. I knew it show up sooner or later. Great buy! Perfect example of Sears art.

Pretty sure what happened is there used to be a gargoyle. Batman and Joker were battling it out. Then thanks to Batman's new found Bane juice he was getting the upper hand when the gargoyle couldn't take the strain and flew to Paris where it is lying in wait to attack Superboy. (Sadly the gargoyle is not wearing purple trunks). Joker slips, Batman catches him. Joker pulls out the infamous squirt gun.
The exciting conclusion is coming up. Same Bat-time, same Bat-place.

This is such a well thought out piece. Framing Batman with the negative space brings your eye there first. Then he uses that vertical composition and center page framing to take your eye down the page to the Joker and the details that tell the rest of the story.
