DescriptionA great page from the penultimate issue of Wally Wood's run on DD, featuring the introduction of a pretty wacky team of villians (collectively, the Ani-Men) under the leadership of the perhaps aptly named "Organizer".This page features an awesome underwater scene with DD and Frog Man (and reminiscent of some of the scenes in DD #7 (with the Sub-Mariner)). DD is also in every panel. It is a powerful page from a visual standpoint. Vintage Wood. And while expensive, it was thankfully obtained while prices were just a little bit saner. While many have insisted that Wood was only the inker on this issue (which he wrote and plotted), it is odd that Bob Powell would have been specifically credited only with the layouts (credit for layouts only did not happen often (see, for instance, the Sentinels trilogy in X-Men #14 to #16, where Jack Kirby was specifically credited with the layouts)). Interestingly, in the next issue (DD #11), Bob Powell is expressly credited with the pencils and Wood the inks (with no mention of layouts). I guess that part of the reason for this debate is that Wood inks would theoretically lower the price of the artwork. Perhaps "theoretically" is the keyword because pages from Wood's run on DD (commencing from DD #5) have steadily been increasing substantially in price regardless of the precise credits over the years. Perhaps this is because the run was so short. In any event (and perhaps more importantly, in my view), it really doesn't matter - Wood's inking was so powerful that it literally overwhelmed whosever pencils that were being inked. So much by way of background debate. The fact remains is that this is, as I mentioned, a great page and, as a collector, that is the main thing - enjoyment of the hobby in general and the artwork in particular. Social/Sharing |

At some point, it just looks so wonderful that it doesn't matter on the credits unless you're just trying hard to be some purist or there is enough on the table for you to choose. That time for being choosy is long gone while the art remains impeccable.

Great page! I have always found the credits on these issues to be dubious. The crux for me is this: the page layouts strike me as way too dynamic and inventive to be Powell. It's a quality I haven't seen in my (granted somewhat limited) knowledge of Powell's body of work. It would make more sense to me that these are Wood's layouts with Powell finished pencils and Wood's inks. Just one opinion from the peanut gallery.

I prefer not to speculate, as it's all just conjecture anyway. The price of these pages will rise to whatever level they rise to, if for no other reason than they are from Daredevil #10. The spotting of blacks is impeccable on this page, beautifully balanced and so easy on the eyes. There is a lot to enjoy here, so focus on that! 😀

There's no other way to say it. This page is flat out beautiful! Daredevil looks fantastic and the spotting of blacks on the page does so much to push the characters forward in just the right ways. Truly a wonderful page! Huge congrats!

wow. everypanel in this page is perfect. none of them are lackluster in any way and the fact these were done by WW shouldn't surprise me but i look at it as the feather in the cap.

Layouts are far from an artist being the penciller. It would make Wood the Finisher, making what you see truly his. Either way, I love this page!

Many thanks, Steven. Yes, Wood's inking was, as mentioned, so powerful that they virtually always made a page his. But some have argued that Powell was also the penciller.

Yes, Powell was an excellent artist and, to be fair, his coming on board the title didn't make any real difference to the resulting artwork. However, in issue 11 (Wood's final DD issue), he is credited with full pencils - which makes sense because Wood was leaving Marvel. That makes the crediting of Powell with layouts on this issue quite logical as well. But there will always be views, especially when pages like this cost so much. As for me, I simply collect what I love provided I can afford it at the time.
