Description

Latest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #131, art by Shawn van Briesen, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Marvel Super-Heroes #17, original art by Howard Purcell and John Romita. Shawn has done some excellent covers for me in the past, but I think this one, with his suggestion of a lightly-coloured background to show the hallucinations of the Shining Knight, is the best yet!

Title: "Doorway To Nightmare! "

Story: In the last issue, Sir Justin was captured by humanoid dinosaurs under the command of the deadly Dragon King, allowing Firebrand to escape. Taken to the villain's base, he's thrown into a room pending interrogation. Meanwhile, Firebrand returns to the cave where the two heroes have been hiding, determined to rescue her comrade - but as she approaches it, she stumbles across the dead body of a marine and a smashed radio. Salvaging parts from it, she's able to repair the other radio she's been working on, and send a desperate SOS message, hoping that someone will pick it up...

...and they do! Her cry for assistance is detected both by a nearby ship - with a very special crew - and, from further away, by Blackhawk, who's flying out to the site of the under-construction Pacific Blackhawk Island, to join some of his fellow airmen who have been overseeing the work. The aerial ace has to continue to the island to refuel before he can return, but he relays the message to Pearl Harbour, and Ensign Rod Reilly. The ship, however, gets close to Dinosaur Island and disembarks five figures in a small boat - Lt Matthew Shrieve and the other members of the Creature Commandos!

Meanwhile, the Dragon King has begun to interrogate the Shining Knight, using his hypnotic powers to break the hero's will. Sir Justin sees visions of his faithful steed, Winged Victory, and some of his fellow All-Stars - and then a more terrifying vision, of a bat-winged man, a humanoid wolf, a woman with living snakes for hair, and a giant seemingly composed of the sewn-together bodies of several soldiers!

In reality, the Creature Commandos have invaded the Dragon King's base, and crash in to rescue the captive Knight, even as the villain makes his escape. But Sir Justin, still hallucinating from the effects of his hypnotic ordeal, has no idea that the demonic figures he's seeing are there to rescue him - and launches an all-out attack on them!

To be concluded - next issue!

This is a GEM of a cover. The blue hue adds to the whole etheral overall effect

"Ethereal" is exactly the word I used to try and explain to Shawn the effect I was after.😉

Looks like it might have worked!

Great choice of artist since SVB has that 50's vibe in a lot of his work.  This one is just so vibrant with his color choice.
