Description

A beautiful Rip Kirby daily by John Prentice. I’m a huge Al Williamson fan and that lead me to discover Prentice’s severely underrated work on this strip. Al served as John’s assistant for several years on Rip Kirby and it was a formative experience for him before taking over the X-9 strip. I love Prentice’s elegant and controlled line work and the last panel jumped out to me as particularly badass for a character usually described as a modern gentleman detective 😆 Prentice won the National Cartoonist Society Comic Strip award three times during his run on Rip Kirby including the year this strip is from. If you’re a fan of detective stories and immaculate craftsman I highly encourage you to check out Rip Kirby and buy up any Prentice work while it’s still cheap.

That last panel is effective storytelling.  He has put away his pipe from the first panel and got down to business.  That second panel with the sightline going directly to the gun in the third panel is telling as well.

Great observations!  Prentice hasn't gotten his due yet, but as Chris says, get em while they're relatively cheap!
