Description

This scene was directed by Ferdinand Horvath, but it is very unlikely that he painted the background himself.

Note that the damage to the background is located at the exact location where the cel was placed against it when they were originally photographed in the making of the short cartoon [as seen in the additional image from the actual cartoon].

Collecting Disney Animation Cels, cont.

I almost became ill from the prolonged pressure, but, finally, one day the source told me I could come by his condo one early morning before I was scheduled to got to a nearby court for a hearing. I actually arrived early [something I am definitely not known for], so I waited in my car until the appointed time. I took a few thousand dollars of cash with me, and finally, everything paid off. As it turned out, we finally met on the very day which the last of his decade-long employment at the Walt Disney Studio!!! He brought out a number of less-than-important cels, lost boys from Peter Pan, Kings from Sleeping Beauty, and such, which were clearly cels left behind by my friends. It was a little hard to find enough to buy, but I spent $700 and got to know the seller. I also told him what I was looking for and flashed the unspent hundred dollar bills in the envelope I had brought with me. I then went off to court, a little disappointed but very relieved that contact had finally been made. Just a few days later, I was invited back, and now there were much better cels being offered ... I had no trouble at all spending all the money I brought with me. And the rest is history. Fortunately, my new found friend had many cels and drawings which he had kept in reserve or which were in his personal collection. Each time I was invited to return, more and more treasures were offered for purchase, and the prices were at least 2/3 less than what I had been paying. I eventually ended up buying hundreds of cels and drawings over the course of many years. And, of great but slghtly less obvious importance, I met and made friends with others who worked at the studio, opening new collecting opportunities and a great deal of information which helped me to become one of the best-connected collectors of animation art during the early days of what soon became an extraordinarily popular form of comic-related art.

About Fake Disney Cels

I have encountered very few cels which I was convinced were forgeries. But the potential for fake cels is fairly great, especially when dealing with cels on cut down pieces of acetate. This is because there have been so many woman who have worked in Disney's ink and paint department over the years who could easily have created new cels if they had access to original drawings or even cels to use in making fakes. Very early on, I met one such former Disney employee who was in our office to visit my boss at the time. I had just bought my first cel of Captain Hook, which had a very small chip in the black ink of the character's eye -- ink, not paint, was used by the studio in painting black areas on cels, and that ink was much more fragile when it dried than was the regular paint used for colors of cels. I asked the woman if she could touch up Hook's eye. She said that she could easily repair the damage and that it would be very easy for her to do so. I never had the work done, and I never saw her again, but I have no doubt that someone with similar experience could easily fake Disney cels and that they would be extremely difficult to detect as being forgeries.
