Description

Tension, pacing, and dynamic storytelling explode off of this CRAZY double page spread. For the eight or so years when Brian Bendis was at the helm (and even extending into the Jonathan Hickman run), ‘New Avengers’ was always my go-to title for beautiful art and fun, exciting, well-executed super-heroic dramatics. The lineup of artists on the title was nothing short of astonishing, and among all of them the team of Bendis, Stuart Immonen, and Wade von Grawbadger was my favorite. It was during this arc (the first arc of ”Vol. 2”) that they were at the peak of their collective powers.

This spread is full of incredible action and characters, and drips with artistic and storytelling flair.

In this moment of the story, as a tear forms in the wall between our dimension and others, Carol Danvers attempts to fly into it to absorb the energy pouring through, not realizing she faces physical discorporation by doing so. All the Avengers race to stop her; Doctor Strange’s astral form explodes out of his body to chase her, and when the warnings screamed at Carol don’t stop her, Jessica DROPS Luke (from hundreds of feet up) in order to pursue Carol unencumbered…

I’m a big fan of “in camera” effects, and love what Mssrs. Immonen and von Grawbadger achieve here through technique and creative muscle: how they underscore Carol’s speed by having her fly into the dimensional tear from right to left in panel 3, making use of the momentum our eyes are already providing as they skip down to that second tier of panels and propel her even further left, even faster. I love how Carol becomes more and more washed out on the page as she nears the dimensional tear in the sky (and imminent physical disintegration)…. Panel 4 is simply stunning.

The horror and helplessness of her earthbound comrades as they realize the consequences of what Carol is about to do here is palpable, and desperation oozes out of each and every panel (now coming at us rapid-fire on the bottom tier, ratcheting up the tension even higher): the Avengers HAVE to reach Carol. Carol HAS to push through the pain and make it to the tear to save us all…. The backgrounds are detailed and perfect; the pacing of the action is pedal-to-the-metal and dynamic. This is an incredible spread.

It's gorgeous and I can't believe I get to stare at it for hours now in person. Eternally grateful, Zack! Eternally, I say!

Great sense of power and action that lasts throughout the entire scene!  The panels are varied and allow for smooth camera transitions panel to panel that showcase the full range of the action clearly.  Stuart Immonen and Wade von Grawbadger work this Bendis DPS to its maximum potential!

Another great Immonen piece! His action scene storytelling is second to none - no words needed here! Also a strong cinemetic feel to this one, like you're watching a big MCU battle :) I gotta get MY Immonen soon! Congrats, Jason!

Thanks (as always), K, for the great comment, and I think you really put your finger on why this spread has such 'oomph'; technical pyrotechnics and dynamic composition, without question, but the sense of storytelling is the killer...  No story beat or detail is lost (no captions are needed), even amidst the breakneck pace and camera jumps being used here.  Big action comics storytelling at its finest.  And with your superb eye, I honestly can't wait to see what published Immonen you'll add to your awesome gallery!  Thanks again, K (and all), for the comments!

The only "problem" with the amazingly well written and detailed commentary on your own artwork is that it literally leaves me with nothing left to say because you always say it all! So....Baller?

lol!  Thanks, Ruben.  "Baller" will do nicely (I did technically leave that one out)!  :)

Thanks, Nash, very much! You and I are on the exact same page (here, literally :) ) with that view of 'New Avengers': I think you're spot on with your assessment (and although I initially thought you had said that New Avengers will always be the "bacon" of graphic storytelling... it turns out I'm ALSO in complete in agreement with you there, too :) ).  Thanks for your kind words, Nash, and for swinging past to take a look.

Holy guacamole.  This art jumps out at you like you're in the front row of an IMAX flick on opening day.  Heart soars with Carol...

Thanks, Steve, and I think you're absolutely right about the impact, immediacy, and IMAXitude ("IMAXimum"?) found here.  The whole Immonen / von Grawbadger stretch of issues was fantastic, but there was something about this arc - I don't know if it was the bright 'Heroic Age' "relaunch" spinning out the "nighttime" 'Dark Reign' storyline, but there was an energy present that was (and is) intoxicating and wonderful in the work.  Story, dialogue, pencils, and inks - the whole team was firing on all cylinders.  Thank you (as always!), Steve and everyone for your comments!

Great great double spread.

I LOVE that first panel with the astral projection that Immonen drew differently than the usual ways these sequences are drawn, adding a sense of urgency to it.

And the fourth panel really underlines the overal sense of speed of the whole scene as well as Ms Marvel strugling while facing the danger.

My word, that first panel is amazing. Shades of Brunner in composition. Agreed, Jason, this is an astounding page. Those cinematic angles and scenes let the action and drama just jump right off of the page. Gorgeous DPS. You have quite an eye, Jason. Super work from an amazing trio. Big congrats!

I love your analysis of why Carol is flying from right to left in panel 3! What an amazing scene this was!
