DescriptionLast Jade Giant June add! Top 2 names and runs I think of when I think “Hulk” are the ‘80s Byrne issues as a kid and the early ‘90s Keown issues as a preteen. Started this month off with the former and ending with the latter! Don’t think I need to speak too much on Keown. His 28 issue run from ’90-‘92 cemented him as one of the best artists to ever work on the character. Any questions? :) On to the art! This is from part 3 of 3 of the “War and Pieces” arc, with the Merged Hulk incarnation tying up the last loose end in capturing the arc’s main villain, Farnoq Dahn. Dahn ends up getting worse in the next page, though, courtesy of Rick Jones. Love the transition in panel 5 to the splashy shot in panel 6! The head shot is almost the same in both, making you think from one panel to the next that his head is staying completely still while he’s ripping through the wall. Great stuff! Love that I got those shots as well as a profile one in the last panel. Again, a fave type of page of mine – some great storytelling from top to bottom mixed with a killer splashy image in one of the panels. Keown incorporated both beautifully throughout his run and I’m stoked to have my example here. Farmer’s inks are CLEAN, particularly on the Hulks hair, and I love how he rendered the face shading with those diagonal lines in the last panel. Thanks, Mike Burkey with a Billigan Cox assist! And as always, thanks for looking everyone, and I hope you like! And Dave W – this is it for Hulk adds. For now :) Social/Sharing |

I don't think the Hulk was ever better than it was during the David/Keown run, and I'd present those last two panels as Exhibit A and Exhibit B to help make my case.

I may have to agree with you but 'll caveat that I'm not as up on some other Hulk runs as others might be. But our opinions are informed by our own experiences, right?! His run truly was game changing. I didn't have every issue but had a batch I looked at ALL the time cuz I was wowed by the art. Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

WOW! There are Keown pages and then there are KEOWN pages, and you, my friend, got yourself a KEOWN page here! (And in my opinion, "Keown!" works better as the sound effect in panel 4 :) ) A phenomical page here showing why exactly the criminal element goes with flat-screen TVs now. AWESOME pick up, K, and a terrific bookend to your great Byrne page. Great Jade June adds, pal! Yowza!

"Don't make me territorial - you won't like me when I'm territorial." Looks like I let up just in the nick of time, Dave :) Appreciate the kudos from Mr. Jade Giant himself - thanks, man!

This is amazing. Nothing can beat the 90's Keown Hulk portrait. Totally jealous of this page and totally would've jumped on this had I been present too. Congrats Kahlil!

Thanks, T! Much appreciated from one of THE Hulk OA aficianodos! You got some great Hulk Keown pieces yourself, bud, big surprise :) Super happy with the Black Panther cover I have, one of favorite pieces to this day, but I did want to get a nice example from the book we all think of automatically when we think Keown - box checked!

TBKs -- Throwback Keowns! It's tough enough to illustrate ferocity, but sophisticated intellectual ferocity... Keown nails it.

Stunning Keown page from a story I remember fondly. You're right, the Hulk keeps his face (and terrifying grimace) stationary as he rips through the wall. Very cool. Film at Eleven indeed. I think the news is all bad for Farnoq Dahn. Congrats, K!!!

A very exciting page with terrific sense of scale on display. From a distance, looks a bit like the Hulk is sporting a handle bar mustache.. which I dig even if its just a figment of the imagination. Huge congrats!!

Hmm, didn't see it initially but can a little if I stretch. I wonder if George H's comment prior to yours mentioning the hair helped you see it. And both you and he rock some nice facial hair - mayhaps you or he give the handlebar a try?! I think you could pull it off! I know the Red Hulk character sported that look for a bit. Thanks for the add, duke!

We control your horizontal. We control your vertical. The Outer Gamma Limits. I remember this specific page, and how much I dug that moment. Take that, Farnaq! Peak Merged Hulk (and Keown). Panels 4,5,6 are a fantastic sequence, imo. Big congrats, Kahlil!

Nice! "There is nothing wrong with your television set." Farnaq may beg to differ, lol! Thanks for the add, J!

I love how he drew the Hulk's face in panels 5 and 6 almost identically. It's amazing to me looking back over 30 years later, how relatively brief Keown's run on the title was. Barely more than a couple of years, yet the run is so memorable that I had it in my mind that it was around 4 years long. Great way to end Hulk month, Kahlil!

Primo Keown Hulk page, congrats! Keown's Hulk is so good, it was used by Capcom of Japan for their 2d Marvel fighting games beginning in 1995!
