Description‘Alias’ and ‘Jessica Jones’ were both great titles for the entirety of their runs, and one of their many charms was that they took place on the fringes of the Marvel Universe. It was always a treat to see Michael Gaydos draw a mainstream hero cameo or two, but here they overrun the entire middle tier of panels: Capekillers, Avengers, Defenders… the gamut.I love how (with the three top and bottom panels allocated to separate pages) this feels like it would normally be a one page, nine-panel set up... but when the “exploded view” of Jessica’s imagination takes over (and she gets carried away by all the trouble she believes she’ll find behind the door of her office), it pushes everything outward and necessitates the spread. A fun narrative trick, like a character in a movie daydreaming some intense action scene or loud showdown, only to have the camera snap back to the character in the “real world”, still and silent. There's just something about a Michael Gaydos page that is unlike anyone else's. He has an unconventional, fearlessly "indy" approach that is very striking to me. It has a very organic feel to it (with the freehand panel borders, etc.), but he'll leave big gaps on pages (or make a 34 panel DPS) that displays a narrative "science" or technique that makes study of his art a very rewarding experience. Awesome stuff. A really fun spread (with a gorgeous shot of Jessica in panel 3 and a final panel that seems, interestingly, to have been replaced in the published work). Thank you once again, Mav - it will be treasured. Social/Sharing |

Well designed dps that isolates the issue and puts it into focus. It shows her post traumatic anxiety disorder and fear of helplessness. Unable to cope with an everyday situation, she just decides to leave the problem for another day.

I'm with you, Jason, I really enjoyed both Alias and Jessica Jones! This is a very lovely double page spread. Not only are the 2 head shots of Jessica excellent, but how can anyone not love the camera sweeping across, showing the heroes crowding her dark, dusty office?

Great spread! It's not easy finding Gaydos Jessica Jones pages with lots of other heroes on them!

Thanks, Ted! The awesome Gaydos examples you have in your collection contain excellent examples of the Supers "crossing over" into Jessica's world, too... I love how your Thor page is well-lit and bright (like the Silver Age era the story takes place in) and your Jessica Drew splash is darker and more in keeping with the modern age, noir feel Mssrs. Gaydos and Bendis were going for. Definitely fun variance of tone and style employed by them in the book(s)! Thank again, Ted (and all) for your comments!

Strong cinematic feel to this as you move along the spread. Maybe a dream sequence :) All the inks and subsequent shadows also ramp up the sense of atmosphere a lot. I can see why you dug this, Jason - congrats!

Love visiting your page, Jason, because I know to expect non-run-of-the-mill art. Our superheroes are more relatable with this kind of artistic treatment.

I see you are on a Bendis trend ;)
Alias & JJ are most likely the best and most consistent run Bendis wrote at Marvel offering great grounded & moody art by Gaydos.
My only regret is that Marvel didn't let Bendis use Jessica Drew for the title as originally pitched but then again, we now have 2 great characters instead of one?

Thanks, F M! Guilty. :)
Absolutely in agreement with you about the consistency and excellence of Alias / JJ... I go back and forth about whether it was Jessica's book(s) or the Bendis / Maleev 'Daredevil' run that was most consistent, tone-wise, but I think Jessica may have the upper hand (interestingly because of the work done on the issues where Maleev or Gaydos were NOT the main artists...). Compare the 'Daredevil' trial of White Tiger arc with the Bagley-rendered Purple Man 'Alias' arc: both absolutely excellent, but I think Alias may edge out DD here. Maybe. Sounds like it's about time for another re-read! :)
And yes - I often think about what would have happened if Bendis's original pitch (of Ms. Drew as the protagonist of 'Alias') had been accepted. Spider-Woman caught her wave in 'New Avengers' and I love how that went; I'm really happy Ms. Jones was left alone in her darker corner so that we could receive the stories we did (with the consistency of tone you mentioned earlier). It definitely might make a fun 'What If', though! Thanks again, F M (and everyone)!

It's like a Marvel PSA for anxiety. Could it be illuminated any better (or sympathetically, imo)? I love the gritty and dark tone of Gaydos' work, with those Mignola Black inks. A great spread, and agreed on the quality of the run, too. Great find, Jason. Congrats!

Thanks, J H! Yeah, one of the things that made the hero cameos fun in Alias / JJ were that those interactions both looked and felt like what Jessica's world view was, tone-wise; the heroes were seldom the bright, heroic archetypes we saw in any other book - they were less graceful, more brutish sometimes... Less "pinnacle ideal" and more "flawed human". Mr. Gaydos's art was perfect for it; darker, noir-ish, grounded, and organic, and it certainly cast the heroes in a tone completely unique to this book. Thanks, J H (and all)!
