DescriptionLet the X Games Begin!Known for being America’s greatest pastimes, BASEBALL, finally makes it into my favorite pastime X-MEN COMICS. This is a page from the early New X-Men era well before the series became UNCANNY X-MEN, #110, where we see the first X-Men game of homo-superior baseball. One of my favorite things about the X-Men series is seeing characters come to life with very human events, it isn’t always fighting, costumes and powers (even though I do really enjoy that as well). I’ve always enjoyed seeing behind the curtain in the lives of the X-Men, when they are poolside, playing football or any games. This historic page features so many goodies. It’s an early appearance (within their first two dozen books) for Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Wolverine (not to mention an almost complete lineup of the current team of this era). It’s a page that features really fun uses for powers in gameplay, Jean using her telekinesis to catch Colossus’s powerful hit, Colossus transforming into his metal form to tackle Wolverine and most X-citedly getting his “SNIKT” of his Adamantium claws. Also getting Colossus calling Wolverine “Tovarisch”, Wolverine calling Colossus “Bub”, and Colossus countering with “Little Comrade”. So many great little moments on a single page, with how Wolverine addresses “Jeannie” and the great collision, dust and all at the end. I didn’t really know much of Tony DeZuniga’s work until I saw this page in hand. His detail and characterization for this particular issue is on point and matches so well to the previous master, Dave Cockrum, who is rumored to have done the layouts and design for this issue in tandem. It’s also very early work from Claremont’s famous X-Men run, which really put the X back in X-Men and really restarted the magic that these characters really have. Another really X-cellent piece of X history that I am very proud to have in my collection and to share on this site. Social/Sharing |

That's great! I love Wolvie's glove already has a cutout for his claws. I wonder how many previous gloves he ruined before he figured it out!

There's a rule against blocking the plate now.
Rule 7.13 A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the Umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the Umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball).
In such cases, all art shall be sent to my address for safe keeping.

I remember this page so well. I don't know why it is so charming to see the X-men playing baseball, but it really is. I love that Nightcrawler is a great pitcher but Colossus will not be stopped. This is one of those pages you hold on to forever. Huge congrats!

Colossus, what a boss. Amazing to see the two halves of the Fastball Special collide like this!

Fantastic X-Men page and a very memorable scene, congrats James. DeZuniga's fluid lines are perfect for baseball!

X-Men playing baseball?! So awesome! The last 2 panels really make it clear you don't want Colossus on the opposite team. Congrats on the cool pick up!

This is one very memorable page for me from when I originally read the series. I know it is for many people.
Awesome addition to your collection!

This is a great page from a great fill-in issue. For guys like me who have been around for a quarter century, pages like this one are examples of how much the hobby has grown over the decades. There was a time when this and all other pages from this issue were despised and unwanted. Sure, people would buy them, but in no time flat they'd sell them to someone else who would then do the same until every page had accumulated a list of at least 4 or 5 owners within a few years.
Thankfully, so many more people have entered the hobby in the intervening years that these pages are now rightfully appreciated and treasured. X-Men and baseball? How can you NOT love it?!?

As iconic sports/comic book pages go, it's no SPALDING PRESENTS STREET BALL WITH RICK BARRY AND DR. J!, but, yeah, it's pretty good, you know, for baseball and X-Men and stuff. (Also, do you think that lady who wrote Twilight got the idea for the vampire-family bonding baseball scene from this issue? Asking for a friend.)
