DescriptionPsychic Showdown!Nostalgia is my drug of choice and this page gives me the most X-cellent high. So many things I love about this page and artwork. My first Andy Kubert art page with Fabian Nicieza’s at the helm for storytelling, featuring my favorite character, Psylocke. This era of X-Men was for me the start to when I was hooked and going to the shop weekly with my mom and brother to get the latest and greatest. I was hooked and had a young boy’s crush on Psylocke (Betsy Braddock). The X-Men at this time featured her and Revanche (Kwannon) in almost every issue. I am enthralled and wanted to know everything about her and their crazy connection. The art was at its peak for how I visually wanted to see the X-Men (especially in action), now I unknowingly look and seem to be drawn to this style today, my head turns every time I see something even remotely similar. The Nicieza and Kubert era was for me the best time to be young and discovering comics. This page features some amazing action, dialogue and call-backs to earlier issues. Psylocke and Jean finally get some much needed pent up anger resolved during a psychic training course. They have some uncanny bonding time and we see Psylocke apologizing for how she aggressively went after Jean’s now husband, Scott (Cyclops), X-Men issues #17 and 20 for great examples. We also get to see Jean in her psychic battle armor, some great action on the psychic plane, and Psylocke in her best outfit with her new hair cut short. Love that she needed a change after loosing Kwannon/Revanche to the Legacy virus but glad they had her grow it back out. This is an X-ceptional page featuring Psylocke coming back into her own well being after learning a lot from the Revanche saga, getting her psychic strength back up and rebonding with her fellow telepathic X-woman friend Jean. Getting a page where Psylocke addresses her odd feelings for Scott, while referencing Kwannon’s sensuous influence and admitting attraction to him, all while battling it out with Jean is absolutely X-citing and a page I will cherish completely. Killer piece from the 90's where every X title crossed over, so more focused pages of team relationships serve great storytelling purpose.

HUGE congrats, James! Your fave character done by some of your fave artists of the '90s - tough to beat :) I've dug Kubert's action oriented storytelling for a long time. He's definitely one of the best at it. Congrats!

This is so awesome! Love the content, the two characters going at it, the difference between what's going on on the psychic plane vs. the 'real' world--and the "Psylocke" image and header at top. Great stuff!

This page has so much going for it. I just picture Cyclops chilling out somewhere in the mansion, playing 'The Girls' by Calvin Harris, admiring himself through a ruby tinted hue.

I miss having word balloons on comics, but my favorite part of this might just be Psylocke's reflection on her blade. Congrats on a great page! 2 demerits for all the X-traneous puns.

I must confess I don't remember anything about the Psylocke/Kwannon storyline or explanation and that, much like the two Magneto's storyline, it seemed far fetched to me even at the time.
(I mean how many "evil doubles" even exist in X-Men's convoluted history?)
But like you, I truly enjoyed that run and while Kubert would become a much better artist, he was already very very good. The art was never at fault and provided a lot of enjoyment.
That first panel left an impression for one.
Congrats.

Fantastic page, and I really enjoyed your description. Those first two exciting action panels contrast nicely with that last panel where the two women do some reflecting and bonding. X-Cellent pick-up !!!

I always hated the haircut they gave Betsy during this period but loved this page regardless. The name across the top, the reflection, the clash between her and Jean after all the Cyclops drama. There's a lot to love here.
