DescriptionDetective Comics (Vol. 1) #1000 Variant Cover Color Guide (DC, March 2019). Color guides are very uncommon in the modern era, but Neal is old school and still does them the old fashioned way, printing out the cover at comic book size and then hand painting the colors for the final colorist to use. I feel quite privileged to own both the original line art and color guide for this variant cover for Detective 1000, which I personally think is one of the best covers done for this issue period. The colors are so vibrant from his painting, and you can tell he put the same love and care into this color guide as he does into his line art. His notes are great as well, such as calling out stone texture on the gargoyle and use real lightning in the background (which was not drawn on the original cover). Great companion piece to the original cover art! I'm already picturing this in one of your custom frame displays along with the pencils and inks.

Yes! My cgc book signed by Neal is back at CGC getting signed by Jim Lee / Scott Williams / Alex Sinclair, but once I get it back, I will be framing the original line art + color guide + cgc book together for sure. Still have to figure out exactly how to layout (whether vertical or horizontal), but Ruben (my framer) will have a good eye to help me figure that out!

I expected nothing less! 😉 Can't wait to see it all put together.

Even back in the 70's, Adams was experimenting and opening up the playbox of color palettes that he learned from commercial art to utilize on newsprint and comic covers which had been in the dark ages of technology. Many of the techniques he uses today are not cutting edge computerized, but give a natural flow and blend like a painter would.
