DescriptionWelcome back to another new art Sunday here at Shemp's Gallery. This month the focus is on what I call specialty art. Art that was published but not in comic book form. It could be anything from poster art, card art, style guides, house ads, apparel and everything in between. To celebrate the relaunch of the Milestone characters I pulled out this fun piece. Not quite a cover, this falls into the everything else category. In the summer of 1994, DC Comics and Milestone Media published an intercompany crossover called Worlds Collide. It featured a meeting between Metropolis-based superheroes from the DC Universe and Dakota-based superheroes from the Dakotaverse. It was a 14 part series that ran through the Superman titles and four of the Milestone titles. It included a one shot special called Worlds Collide #1. Worlds Collide #1 came in two editions, standard and collectors. The Collector's Edition came polybagged and when you took the comic out the bag the cover was clear on both sides except for the cityscape of Metropolis and Dakota. It came with a selection of vinyl clings. Then you made up your own cover with the clings. The Collector’s Edition had what I consider the best gimmick cover of the 90's...Colorforms! Forget the foil enhanced, chrome enhanced, holographic, die-cut, glow in the dark covers, with this cover you could design your own cover. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved playing with colorforms as a kid so for me this one was especially cool. I only have the art to the vinyl clings and not the cityscapes. 1994's Worlds Collide #1 vinyl cling art by M.D. Bright PS. Special shout out to the Fortress of Baileytude, who has a wealth of information on everything Superman and has a ton of great scans and images. Social/Sharing |

A joy to behold. Wonderful artwork for the special project. Coloforms were important when you didn't have the budget for action figures to be able to use this to stage imaginary battles and scenes. Using the same concept for this variant is a clever concept, but not many we're going to open the poly bag in the collectors market.

I was already in my twenties when this came out, so I would've been likely to just buy the regular edition. But it makes me wonder just how cool the special edition must've been for any kid starting to read comics. I mean, "design your own cover by rearranging all the heroes and putting them where you want? That's nothing if not FUN! To find and acquire the original art for something as esoteric as this is quite a coup, Shemp, so big kudos to you for getting this!

I loved colorforms so much as a kid. This is really fun to see. I agree with Ruben that this would have blown my mind in a good way if I had seen this cover as a kid. Such a cool concept! And the art is nicely done. Huge congrats!

Love this! So much fun. I'm looking for a copy of this with the clings attached I like them so much.
Thanks for sharing.
