DescriptionFirst cel posting! Won’t be collecting these per se, but a few here and there, sure! Here I figure getting a page from BP’s first appearance in FF #52 might be a little tough, so I picked up this cel from episode 20 of the mid ‘90s series, which is basically FF #52 animated. In this scene, BP fights the Thing after having taken down the Human Torch and Invisible Woman. It’s actually 3 pieces that came as part of the package. First the painted cel itself, second the attached background painted in gouache, and lastly the original pencil line art. I was surprised how nicely the background was painted, and it wasn’t even used for the show. At least not for this scene. The scene was moved underground. Check out the shot here at 2:25 in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MHT5IYvDBs. And Keith David voiced T’Challa! An animated voice acting old hand, having done Spawn, Goliath in Gargoyles, and lots of others I don’t know about. This one’s for you, Tommy S :) Social/Sharing |

T'Challa wouldn't miss leg day. He's disciplined like that y'know?! However, there is more to it than meets the eye here! Check out the additional image I added, a page from FF 52, and go 1:42 into the YouTube link in the description. The King's got some stricks up his sleeve. Thanks, Chris, and all, for the comments!

I know it's pretty, baby, but I didn't take it out for air.
Well, according to Tommy S, cels need to breathe.

Crunch. Few look as good as the Panther while doing the aerial acrobatics. I love how cels focus on the most important lines/colors and swing for maximum impact. Grand slam here, baby!

All the animation love that's spurned off of CAF live interviews is truly amazing! Glad I could inspire the comic art collectors like yourself to get their favorite animated characters, which for many was a gateway for comic collecting. This BP is truly amazing and to have both the cel and sketch AND signed by the animator (Tom Tataranowicz) is just icing, sincere congrats man!

Thanks, Tommy! Really dig those Thundercats and Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cels you got. Nostalgia galore! So, yeah, when I saw this available from the BP origin story?! All in, baby.

Wicked cool! NICE grab, K. I have always been enthralled with the notion of collecting animation cels, but am afraid to push my luck... :) I picked up a Skeletor cel (from the old He-Man cartoon) for a buddy of mine, and a Mighty Mouse for my brother-in-law, and they really love them. I'm holding strong for the moment, but seeing this new beauty of yours makes me think, "Surely, a little taste might be nice..." :)
What a beautiful set up here; great colors and paint on both the background and foreground, and you're absolutely right: probably easier to get hold of this than a Panther page from FF #52...
Just like with comic art, I love to see the world outside of the cel borders, as the paint washes away into blotches and the production notes stand watch over everything else. Totally cool, man! Congrats!

Great representative piece of Black Panther in animated series form, congrats on checking this one off the list for animation medium.
Loving your tribute to BP on your wall.

Man, ever since my boy Tommy made that chat appearance on YouTube, a handful of my collector friends have dipped their toes in the animation cell water. Way to go, Tommy! How perfect could this be for your first animation cel purchase, Kahlil? What a great choice! Not only that, but you also get the added background and more importantly the actual line art! If all cels caame this way as a 3-pc. set, I think many more people would dip their toes in these waters!

Thanks, man! While I don't believe I'll go full bore collecting, I may dip my toes from time to time, as you say :) And I agree, having the 3 piece set was huge for me, and I think would be for others, too. "Go, Tommy!" Rocky V voice :)

Fun one. I find that the show sucked majorly (in terms of pure animation) but they did manage to get BP's design right, kind of a streamlined version of Kirby or Ron Frenz?

Oh the show ain't great. Does not hold up well at all. But was cool seeing BP's origin in other media for the first time. Yup, streamlined is best for this - black silhouette with blue outlining. Works. Frenz does pop to mind!

This is PERFECT for your collection! I'll bet whoever you acquired this from didn't have to give you 'the hard cel.' Oooh, bad pun! But great piece!

WOK! Let's match the onomatopoeia to the animated homage. What a perfect find for your collection. T'Challa showing Ben de-feet (it just slipped out! A million pardons!). I love that they used the proper Kirby design, too. That little cape was so sweet. The show might not hold up, but sepia-toned nostalgia keeps it cool in your mind. :) Nice find, Kahlil. Congrats!

Very nice (and surely very colorful :) - T'challa sure is the real "Master of Kung Fu" at marvelous Marvel. Now get one where The Panther roundhouse-kicks Chuck Norris in the face !
