DescriptionThe CAF 'Want List' is a powerful thing. Years ago I put this cover in there never expecting it would one day be in my gallery and collection. I WAY over paid for this cover because 1) Gil Kane is my favorite cover artist, 2) this is definitely the best Western cover Kane ever did (he even thinks so) and 3) it was in my want list, which made me "pull the trigger" and hit the 'Cut Bid' button and probably frustrate and then relieve the previous top bidder as the #'s shot up so quickly he/she probably didn't bargain for ther price t jump that high. Crazy psychology right? Darn you and thank you Bill Cox!! I will treasure this! Here is what HA had to say: Gil Kane Mighty Marvel Western #44 Cover Rawhide Kid Original Art (Marvel, 1976). Kane called this "the best western cover I ever did" in an interview published in Comic Book Artist #2. Rawhide Kid finds himself at the end of many gun barrels. With the title "Doom in the Desert!", how will the heroic gunfighter get out of this in one piece? Both penciled and inked by Kane, the piece is ink over graphite on cover stock Bristol board with an image area of 9.75" x 15". Slight toning, stat logo, header, and text paste-ups, with damage to the Rawhide Kid paste-up. Residue staining, pinholes in the top and bottom margins, cuts in the board repaired by tape on the back, creasing, whiteout corrections, with edge/handling wear. Signed by Kane in the right side image area and in Very Good condition. Social/Sharing |

I actually don't think you overpaid at all--Gil Kane was the greatest cover artist ever, and the fact that he has called this his favorite cover makes it a key piece. He was very proud of the composition of this image, and I couldn't agree more--so awesome. If I could have participated I would have--but happy that the piece went to an appreciative home and that I'm able to enjoy it from afar. Congrats!

That's one of Gil's best and cited as his favorite. The first person view basically says we are the person in the pool's reflection. Grail for Gil Kane fans of his 70's Marvel covers, as this one really stands out.

Lots of artists are good at conveying action and Kane could do that with the best of them. Here, however, Kane does something much harder, creating a scene that shows the beat before the action in a way that creates an intense sense of suspense. It's as if he were daring the reader to open the cover and see what happens next. Yeah, you got a good one here!

A stunning cover by Kane. The framing is perfect. The eye is drawn first to the figure of the Kid, and then to the danger from the pointed guns and lastly to the reflections of the gunslingers. It's always hard to argue that someone has overpaid for a page when it's one they will never tire of looking at, and this is so superb an example of Kane's work.

A good example of where the printed cover doesn't do the original line art justice. Stunning work by one of the masters of the art form.
