Description
This was a labor that truly had The Force on its side. I already had a Darth Vader sketch in my inventory for the Ontario Collector's Convention aka 80s Toy Expo, but I just had to include Anakin Skywalker's wise mentor/arch-enemy. From the start I knew I had to include the shadow of Vader looming in Obi-Wan's life on Tattoine. He is his greatest student and sadly his greatest failure. The objective was to capture the likeness of the late Sir Alec Guinness, Obi-Wan's original portrayer in the Star Wars films. Beyond the uniform and the conveyance of the lightsaber swoosh, if it didn't look like the Obi-Wan everyone knows, it wouldn't work. Etched on 9 x 12, I felt the best frame for this night scene would be the outline of Vader's helmet with the right about of shadows to convey the shape without taking anything away from the main image. I based the stance on a scene from his final duel with Darth Maul in Star Wars: Rebels. The night tones were achieved with B99, B97, and B95 descending, the mountains were BV25, BV29, and BV31 for highlights. The sand itself was accomplished with BG93 and BG96. Yellow plus blue equals green so that's why I went with BG for the sand, while the red stoned mountains would appear blue-violet under a night sky. i'm very proud of the layers of blue that achieved the sky, which was accented by touches of white gel for stars and that iconic two moons in the heavens. That alone conveys what planet Obi=Wan is on. With liquid white gel and Prismacolor white for some shine. The flesh tones of Kenobi were E00, E13, E15, E25, and E37. The outer robes were influenced by the blue as well, taking on E71, E77, and E79 tones. Given the strongest light source is his lightsaber, I kept the saber arm white while E71 give that shine, which had to be dulled because it's a cloth robe, not leather or other materials with a sheen. The main uniform - or habit - was Warm Grays and touches of Prismacolor tones. The lightsaber motion was achieved with layering of night tones going from dark to light and finally the B000 accentuating the white hot nature of the laser blade. This proved to be a hot seller for this convention and I hope to increase my Star Wars inventory going forward. Currently, this piece is For Sale for $110, so for those interested please message me.
