DescriptionElektra by Daniel Warren Johnson. Commissioned at NYCC 2021. 6" x 9"It's 5 AM on Thursday of Day 1 of NYCC 2021 and I trudge myself out of bed and get the day going somehow. It's all a little blurry now. I was on a mission to guarantee myself a DWJ piece without really knowing what the situation was. Also to get on the line out in the streets outside of Javits Center with the diehards, an annual ritual in years past, one that I sorely missed without the convention in 2020. I got there by around 7 AM and the line was already 2 and a half blocks long. By the time the crowd was filing in to the line inside the convention area I ended up being around halfway through the first cue row with a few more hours to wait. As soon as they unleashed the hounds and I got safely clear of crowds of people in front of me, I RAN towards their booth in Artist Alley and got myself on the list. I was 2nd! I asked if Daniel wanted to draw something he wanted to do or hasn't done before but it may have been too early in the morning for that lol. So I asked if he had a preference between Elektra and Swamp Thing and he didn't, so I opted for Elektra. Not really a huge surprise considering where my collecting has been lately but I've been dabbling in the Green as of late also. Anyway - I couldn't be happier with this dynamic piece. I've never been more blown away by a same day convention commission. It is filled with that enigmatic sweeping movement that screams Elektra to me, and breath taking nuance in her character design elements, and sweet background details that do all the mood setting. It pays homage to FM and BS but distinctly DWJ. I'd selfishly love to see a whole boatload of interior pages of this character done by him some day in a standalone graphic novel because I think he could absolutely kill it and join that type of legacy for the character. Thanks again to Daniel and Felix/Yams and the crew. Social/Sharing |

So jealous of your DWJ! But man you earned it braving the wild in that line. Worth it!

thanks man! I really adore this. Also my body certainly paid for it later in multiple ways for putting it through that kind of day but sometimes the con can take it's toll lol

Really nice free flowing ink on this piece, man! The manner in which all the heavy inks were brushed on diagonally from top left to bottom right and then having Elektra intersect that by falling at a slightly more extreme angle from top right towards bottom left to form an X composition, really enhances the feeling of the speed she's dropping at!

This is a killer addition, Kavi and DWJ is someone who knows how to capture a good bit of that Elektra energy!

Beautiful dude! It's a marvel what Dan's able to do even in the environment of a con. Congrats!

I wince thinking about the long-lines/waits even though I haven't done it in a long time. I'm glad your wait proved fruitful.

So many techniques employed here, it’s impossible to catalog them. Magical work by DWJ.

DWS gives us plenty of techniques to study. More importantly, they culminate in a feel of grace and balance of a ballet dancer as Elektra hurtles through the cityscape. Even without sawed off sais, her darting figure provides a sharp point to pierce through the night.

"DWS" indeed! The figure does feel a bit like BWS's Elektra and the piece clearly pays homage to FM; I also get a Bisley vibe from the hint of clowds and distant buildings in the corner. Gutsy choice to mix it up with the directions of her descent and the motion blur on the windows, but it's super dynamic and the composition is great

Very cool piece, I am an Elektra fan too. How big is it? Also, you have to learn how to get yourself a dealer's pass. no lines and in before the masses.

per Kavi's insta story, dwj was offering 6x9s at the show; and only like 3-4 per day; and foot attire with lightning-fast grip traction is a must too haha

Thanks, Jeff! It's 6 x 9. In this particular case, didnt matter if you had a dealer/exhivitor pass, press pass, etc. etc. they did not allow anyone to get dibs prior to show opening...ie, fans who waited on the line. Which I have to say was a real class act move from Felix and his team.

Nicely composed. Lots of kinetic energy. Gritty. What more could you ask for in a comission. Congrats on this amazing art!

wow. tons of comments already. haha. super jelly of this piece bro, which i saw the other awesome ones on insta that dwj had done at the show; he's a hot commodity and to me displays modern expressionism—where the typical representation is abandoned for a more alternate, distorted interpretation; also loving the dynamic angle; kudos. i'm listening to jazz on spotify rn, so i'll ask... got a musical pairing with this beauty?

Mission accomplished! Determination can pay at times :) Well worth the effort, too, man. Dynamic shot of Elektra here, and those looser background brush strokes work perfectly. And you gotta love having some zipatone accents :) Congrats!
