I love this movie! I still remember the very first time I saw the trailer for it. To this day, I couldn�t tell you what movie I was there to watch, but when I left the theater, I could not get that trailer off my mind. In fact, that full length trailer remains my favorite movie trailer of all time. It was only when I watched the movie did I realize the trailer consisted of the entire opening sequence of the film. In terms of marketing strategy, both a risky and brilliant move � releasing such a long trailer and revealing so much of the movie in advance. But it sure worked on me!

For those of you familiar with the film, you know that the Carnotaur was one of the villains in the story (appearing both in the opening sequence and again toward the end of the film). So, I was absolutely thrilled when dinosaur artist extraordinaire (and character design artist for the film) Ricardo Delgado offered me this amazing full color concept drawing. Again, if you�ve seen the film, you�ll probably notice the differences between this design drawing and the final version. The spikey tail and the furry underbelly from the drawing were not in the final model. Plus, the film version had very pronounced horns. But if you look closely at the description on the drawing, it�s actually a juvenile. For myself, it�s an interesting bit of Disney (and dinosaur) trivia to know that they are born with these features and outgrow them as adults.

My profound thanks to the aforementioned Mr. Delgado for his artistry, plus his warmth & kindness during all our dealings and correspondences. just the kind of guy who makes collecting (and spending hard earned money) fun.

This is a cool piece of movie history as well as dinosaur art. It looks like the carnotaurus as designed here was meant to have feathers on its belly maybe?

Notably the same dinosaur is also present in the Dinosaur ride at the Animal Kingdom theme park at Disney World in Florida. I wonder if Ricardo Delgado was involved in that project also?

Will make it a point to ask him the next time we chat. Wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the case, as he had a pretty good working relationship with Disney through most of the 90's and early 2000's. He's worked on several Disney and Pixar projects. As far as the fur (or feathers), I did point out in my description that this drawing is a juvenile and the character featured in the film is an adult without the fur, but with the horns grown in. So presumably, the fur gradually sheds with adulthood. Anyway, thanks for the great comment David, please stay safe.

Holy sh#t! Disney art and from its 3D hours. Congrats on landing such a great piece from a monumental film. Dinosaur is one of the best animated films not enough people saw (in my option).

Agreed. The Jurassic Park movies probably stole a lot of its thunder, but I actually liked the CG work on Dinosaur more than Jurassic (at least the first one). And yes, box office could've been better domestically. Although it did almost $350 million worldwide. Thanks for the comment buddy!

All I drew as a kid was dinos! I would be tempted to hang this on the fridge and not the wall!

Very nice dino drawing. The relationship of birds to dinos being evolutionary linked was made more popular during the Jurassic Park movies. Some of this was based in fossils discovered in the early 90's showing quills and wishbones creating a link between the species.

Great point. I remember Grant's speech about raptors from the first film very well. I imagine that pretty much any carnivorous bi-ped evolved from birds. Would think that Ricardo was certainly aware of this and incorporated that into this drawing. He seems like a stickler for research, so he probably knew more than the film makers what this species actually looked like. If I had to guess, it was probably decided by either the director, producer, or writer, to make the Carnotaur look more ferocious. Hence the addition of horns and the removal of any fur or feathers. Hard to know without seeing Ricardo's design for the adult version.

I remember this preview as well and was just as floored and steeped in anticipation after seeing it. Great piece of art to recapture that emotion Eric! Very well done and excellent addition to your collection. Congrats and thanks fo sharing!

It's always fun seeing these types of pieces on here. I get the same feeling of seeing the sketches and production work that leads to the finished product of a movie or show the same way as I do with comic art. Especially when it's something I really liked. I remember this movie and enjoying it along with the Happy Meal puppets and the lottery promotion they had with McDonald's as I recall when the movie cameout. Great piece.

Thanks David. And I'm with you. Whether it's comic art, movie art, fine art, or whatever. Art is art, and if it speaks to you, it really doesn't matter what it was made for. Funny, I don't remember any of the McDonald's promotions. When you consider how much I love dinosaurs, that's kind of weird. Maybe I just wasn't into puppets. LOL!
