An unpublished FRAZETTA Barbarian in Chainmail armour:I MUST ad a caveat here-a number of people have queried this image & despite my feeling it is right elements of the drawing raise suspicions in my mind.Frank apparently never did pencil under drawing on his ink drawings but whoever has drawn this has loosely placed the figure on the paper & drawn his image in ink.

I bought the drawing in perfectly good faith 20 years ago & circumstantial evidence gave me confidence the drawing was right.

HOWEVER the figure has no feet & despite Frank working with a dip pen & brush when working on sketches in the 40’s to the 60’s the chainmail on the figure is shaded with what looks like a fibre tip pen.

Anatomically the figure is sound & whoever the artist is the weight & heft of the figure make sense & the face with the ‘nutcracker’ jaw are a Frazetta hallmark.The line work is consistent with the way Frank describes form but there is a hesitancy in some of the mark making & describing the form/movement.

Does anyone else have comparable examples to compare?

This has got me very intrigued about an area of Franks output that has gone unremarked on:the number of artists working in the Frazetta style & their efforts in homage OR intention to deceive the unwary buyer.
