Description

Alex Ross' preliminary for his classic cover to Marvels #3 (1994) featuring the Silver Surfer with the Human Torch reflecting against his metallic body. Marvels retold the history of the Marvel Universe through the eyes of one ordinary journalist. The series introduced the game-changing painted artwork of Alex Ross. Issue #3 covered one of the most significant events in Marvel history, the Coming of Galactus.

The impact of Marvels on the comic book reading public was immense. When it was released in late 1993, Marvel had shifted many of their titles away from traditional storytelling to try to capture some of the gonzo success being seen by the upstart Image Comics. However, Marvel no longer had Jim Lee or Todd McFarlane. Adult fans who had been following the line for years felt like there was nothing left for them. Marvels #1 blazed a new trail. Ross' work felt like it was part Neal Adams and part Norman Rockwell.

Very nice art for the issue that represented the coming of age of comics. Surfer representing the new and Torch, even though from the Silver Age, has his roots visually in the golden Age.
