DescriptionFrank Robbins, Johnny Hazard daily, May 24 1971.I remember first seeing Robbins work as a kid, when he took over for Mike Kaluta on the Shadow in the 70s, and drew The Invaders, I think, for Marvel -- the style confused me at the time, very different from anything else in comic books. I've learned since that he was an old-school strip artist, in the Caniff tradition, but he evolved his own style, looser connection between the lines, and more angular, almost expressionistic compared to Caniff and other realistic/dramatic cartoonists. Very distinctive art that is a throwback to another era. Robbin's linework can be studied for how expressive it is as a counter to what his contemporaries were doing.

Beautiful daily! Robbins' work is often described as loose or messy but there's a lot of carefully observed detail in there like the little bit of texture on the guys tie in the third panel and in general the detail on furniture and patterned clothing throughout.
