DescriptionThis page features a fantastic image of the New Brainiac design by the artist who created the re-design himself, Ed Hannigan. This is my all-time favorite incarnation of Brainiac. It was my 4th Kenner Super Powers figure (with action kick)! I also am thrilled that the page has a wonderful panel featuring Brainiac's ship. Sadly, that ship was never a Kenner Super Powers toy. (That did not stop me from drawing a skull face on a piece of discarded styrofoam and attaching some Mattel Secret Wars Doc Ock tentacles [which had long since fallen off Otto himself] to it.) The second story in which Marv Wolfman could explore his ideas and concepts for the New Brainiac was this New Teen Titans Annual. (The previous introduction story line ran through Action Comics #544-546) Outside of Super Powers and Crisis, there aren't too many vintage examples of the New Brainiac. In this page, not only has Brainiac captured the Man of Steel, but is using his very power to obliterate the capital city of a peaceful alien culture. P.S. - There are some missing narration stats from Brainiac on the page. Also, the page is oversized and wasn't easy to scan (although I'm fairly proud of the results). Social/Sharing |

I love that Brainiac! Great page!
Also, I kept looking for the stitch lines on the oversize scan and can't find any. Teach me, Master!

Thanks. I cleaned it up as best I could. If you look at the color page and focus on the chin's of the alien on the left panel and the chin of the ship, you can probably tell. The ship's secondary exhaust(?) vents also aren't as circular as they should be. (I'm never happy with joining scans :) )

I do love this version of Brainiac. The first post-Crisis incarnation of the character that we got was such a letdown compared to this one. Very cool page!

Haha, we definitely do come from the same 'school of appreciation.' (or lack thereof)

Great original piece from the Baxter paper era with the bigger area format. The clean shot of 80's Brainiac is a nice throwback.

A really nice example from this story. I clearly remember buying this issue when it came out. Like most people, I love this version of Brainiac. It's great that you also have a Superman appearance to go with his old foe. Nice catch!

Your excitement's evident in your description, Derek! Congrats on getting a vintage example that clearly tugs at the nostalgia strings :) I'm not the biggest DC guy but I've always loved that Brainiac ship design! Congrats, man!
