Description

I love the early Guardians of the Galaxy, particularly their Marvel Presents series and preceding appearances. My last 2021 pickup was this page from their 4th appearance in 1975.

What's happening here is that the future Vance Astro is recounting their origin to his younger self, who will later grow up to be Marvel Boy/Justice from the New Warriors. At the end of the story, Dr. Strange casts a spell to remove the younger Vance's memories of his older self, which should be a familiar theme to anyone who's seen the new Spider-Man movie.

What also interesting is that Sal Buscema is basically copying from himself in the bottom panel, which is very similar to the second to last page from Marvel Two-In-One #5, from a year earlier. I've included a scan from the comic for comparison.

Looks like those 3 ships are attacking the Starship Enterprise!

Yep.  Dave Cockrum "borrowed" the design of the Guardians' ship (called the Captain America) from the Enterprise and basically just flipped the saucer section from the top to the bottom.

Great pick up Ted, another nice addition to the bronze age GOTG collection.

The Badoon and the Defenders plots had something in common in the '70s: they were all over the place! Thanks for rekindling the memories.

Jesse: The Brotherhood of Badoon are big and they are strong and they know how to double-team.

Gorilla: There's evidence of it right there.

Jesse:Drang caught Cap. Captain America stumbling to the wrong corner, Gorilla.

Gorilla: Yeah, but where was the tag, Jess?

Jesse: There wasn't one.

Gorilla: Oh, double clothesline by the Thing. And the Brotherhood of Badoon are down. And Ebor's upset.

Jesse: Vance Astro and Martinex outside the ring. Yondu is getting double-teamed unmercifully here. Oh! Spike Piledriver...it's over!

Gorilla: Oh, Spike Piledriver nails Charlie-27!

Great page, and thanks for the background info in the description!  That last splashy battle panel is killer and it's cool to know that Sal basically did it before in Marvel 2 in 1 :)  Congrats!

This was a major Marvel Bronze Age storyline, IMHO.  And I agree the Marvel Presents run was a great, and somewhat underrated, series, kind of gothic sci-fi....Gerber was such a great writer.  I wish Marvel deecided to invest more in the original GotG, they are very interested characters.

Agreed.  I didn't love the 90's Guardians series as much as it was standard superhero fare instead of the more offbeat and thought provoking stories from Gerber.

Fantastic page! Doesn't matter if Sal the Pal's copying from himself here, it still looks great.

I loved tracking down beat up readers copies of the early GOTG appearances as a kid in the 1980s.  Fantastic stuff, and this is a fantastic page!

Great page! If a fight scene is that much fun, it's worth doing it twice. I love the instruction at the bottom margin, in blue, to add more scales to the Badoon.

Thanks Dave!  No Hulk on the page, but still pretty cool :)
