DescriptionI've repeated myself numerous times in this Gaar Williams gallery when it comes to my favorite period of his work. This piece, from January 4, 1923, falls right into that roughly 12 year window from the beginning of WWI to the end of the 1920s. Williams was slinging ink left and right like a master pen man. This cartoon, titled "Gee A Whole Load of Coal!", shows off those skills well. The figures are beautifully drawn, with such seeming easy. But the part that really grabs me is the background. Those wonderfully fluid sweeping strokes construct the architecture so beautifully, and that little touch of the long johns flapping in the breeze just gets me. Even though the figures are centered, the composition has so much movement to because of how Williams framed up the action. Just beautiful stuff.Social/Sharing |

Informative slice of life piece showing us more of the times where we normally only get the glamorized images of the roaring 20's.
