I've become pretty picky when it comes to Gaar Williams originals, as I have quite a few of them. I tend to avoid pieces from the 1930s, as Williams' sweet-spot for me is from WWI through the 1920s. But when this piece came up at auction, I knew I had to forgo my my unwritten rule. The drawing is simply superb, with a composition that draws the viewer's eye throughout the piece, over and over and over again. A Strain on the Family Tie was one of Williams' rotating titles. Sometimes it featured Mort Green-like characters, like this one. Other times, there were just any old characters. But the charm in this piece is not found within the characters or gag, but the incredible drawing. Published on September 26, 1933.

Gaar Williams would pass away two years after this panel was publised. 54 years old. Far, far, far too young.

I particularly like the wheelchair user he worked into the crowd. Very nice!
