Description

My first new cover for 2022 and it is a doozy. I've been waiting a long time for this Tedesco cover. Julian only seems to turn out a few traditionally painted covers a year. Typically he works in pencil and adds the paint digitally.

His stuff gets snatched up so quickly, you have to work closely with his rep at Chiaroscuro and be very patient. It was about a year ago that I bought one of Julian's earlier Action Comics variants. But I had buyer's remorse because it was just pencils and I already had one of his pencil covers.

Julian's rep. helped me arrange for one of his other regular buyers to purchase that cover from me and he marked me down for the next painted cover by Julian which didn't come till later in the year. (Very unusual situation and a good reminder to make sure you love something before buying it.)

Everyone at Chiaroscuro was very understanding. And I'm knocked out by this painted piece.

This issue which continues the "Warworld Saga" sees Superman stripped of his powers and forced to fight in the arena as a slave/gladiator as he hopes to bring an end to the rule of the new Mongul.

NOTE FROM JULIAN:
"For that cover, I strayed away from what I was doing with the previous ones because the editor asked me to go for a "Frazzetta" sort of cover. Apparently, the series had that kind of feeling and scenario at that point. I got back to my usual Golden Age visuals in later covers.

I never gave much thought to the S design, but people seem to be very attentive to it and I got a lot of comments about it during my run on AC. I always used the Christopher Reeves design."

The barbarian look works very well for Superman in painted form. More rugged than ever, this evokes the great master painters in fantasy art.

Great observation, Marcus. I tend to avoid more classic fantasy art, so this does work well as a hybrid.

Great story on acquiring this piece. Goes to show that patience pays off, and when you really love something it is worth it. The contrast in this piece is really amazing. Congrats on an amazing pickup!
