DescriptionOkay, so it's not Watchmen, but I"m still very happy to add this Dave Gibbons cover art to my collection. Plus there's not too much Gibbons Marvel art floating out there. Speaking of floating, how about those heads? The first 3 issues of this series featured the Invaders, with some nifty art by Steve Epting and Al Williamson. This issue had two cover versions, one by John Byrne and this one by Gibbons. I think the intent was for this series to act as a try-out book, similar to the earlier Marvel Premiere and Marvel Spotlight series, but it only made it to issue #7. A few notes on the art: * It's drawn on the back of DC art board (don't tell DC -- except I have several DC pieces on Marvel board, so I guess that's makes it even). * This series had a weird placement of the logo/credits on the left, so the art is essentially right justified to leave room. * Gibbons didn't follow his pencils too closely when inking as there are tons of visible pencil lines everywhere. * The computer coloring bugs me on a cover that's supposed to be featuring 1940's characters. While certainly not the worst coloring job, I think this really would have benefited from traditional coloring instead. Compare this with the cover to Marvel Two-In-One #20 for example, which features old-school coloring and more 1940's floating heads. Social/Sharing |

A rare Gibbons Marvel piece indeed. Very fun to see him draw the invaders.

Hurm...that guy in the circle looks kind of familiar. Maybe he kept a journal and will tell us what happened in this book. Hail Hydra!!!

Dave Gibbons drawing the Whizzer on a cover was a rare instance of the character getting the respect he deserves.

Yeah, especially with that nuclear explosion in the background, this screams late 40s early 50s. It would've been nice if they had mimicked a painted cover from the time period. Totally agree with you, but that doesn't stop it from being an awesome Gibbons cover! The subtle light source work on the heads page is a nice touch that makes the simple design work well, imo. Very nice. Congrats!

Watchmen shmwatchmen ;) Great cover image, Ted! Liking the victorious Strucker's working, with that maniacal grin! It's all the heroes can do but to watch and wonder "what do we do?!" Some CLEAN inks. Congrats!
