I recall working on a book review of Understanding Comics for a small fanzine when it was first published. It turned out to be more difficult than I had thought. My earlier reviews were much easier to write. This book was quite different. I began making extensive notes but, owing to a number of other commitments, I never did complete the review. What I can say, though, is that this is a seminal book that explores the comics medium in a conceptual manner that is both penetrating and illuminating. Not surprisingly, it is now one of the foundational books in this genre. That it uses the medium itself to explain the medium is at once creative, fascinating, ironic as well as insightful. Scott McCloud was to later follow-up with a number of sequels but this remains - for me at least - the foundational work.

It comes as no surprise, therefore, that I am always interested in the original art to this book. Unfortunately, those that have come up for auction recently (including this page) have been water damaged. Still, the artwork and narrative, viewed in a holistic fashion, is still as wonderful as ever. This particular page is no different.

The textbook for comics may seem like homework people want to avoid, but it has everything you ever wanted defined and spelled out to become an essential book for any comics scholar.

I think a page from this book should be on the list of every 'serious' collector - nice one!
