Description

I met Howie Schneider about 20 years ago. He lived on Cape Cod, where my parents went in the summer, and we had lunch, he told me his cartoonist "war stories." Competitive work, syndicated cartoonist... Eek & Meek was his most successful (it ran 35 years!), but he had higher hopes for a follow-up project, a strip set in a circus; it failed, he thought, due to some sort of business or politics not things, not the merits. By then he was semi-retired, but had a regular gag feature in the Provincetown Gazette. I have huge respect for a working cartoonist like that, he must have been in the business at least 50 years.

I love the scribbly, expressive cartooning style of Eek & Meek, the grawlixes and krollebitsch and the clever wordplay crossed with slapstick in an abstracted setting; at times it seems almost like "Waiting for Godot" as a comic strip. Surprisingly, according to Wikipedia, "The characters began as anthropomorphic mice, but morphed into humans as of the February 8, 1982, strip."

Works like a cartoon strip with the continuous ground and background only disrupted by the blow. Nice cartooning. I would say he's making a point about ignorance not keeping up with the changing culture of the tumultuous late 60s.
