During Captain James Cook's first voyage of discovery (1768 - 71) his ship, the Endeavour, foundered on the Great Barrier Reef at 11.00 pm 11 June, 1770. Captain Cook and crew would be marooned there for 7 weeks, in the mouth of the Endeavour River, by the docks of modern-day Cooktown, as repairs were made to the ship.

I'm well aware that Captain Cook isn't as popular as he used to be, but his astounding feats of navigation in the Southern Pacific make him a key figure in the C18th scientific enlightenment.

I had um-ed and err-ed about purchasing this page from the Book Palace, but, with their recent 15% Oli Frey sale, I took the plunge. I adore these double page Frey illustrations for Into The Unknown in Look & Learn, but believed that the left-hand text page was lost, since it was not illustrated on the BP website (hence my demurring). Imagine my delight when, opening the parcel, that that page was included! What a joy!

Considerably darkened in print, this page is still bright and fresh...and what a vibrant an atmospheric rendition of the plight of the crew of the Endeavour that night, so very far from home...

It looks great even out of context with the majestic movement of the open water and the ship venturing in a direction away towards the horizon.
