DescriptionNova was one of Marvel's attempts to make a teen hero "In the Marvelous Tradition of Spider-Man" (as per issue #1's cover). His original series started in 1976 and lasted for 25 issues. The storyline was then wrapped up in Fantastic Four #206-214 and finally Rom #24 in 1981.This page features the "final" appearance of Nova in costume as the Xandarians take away his powers before transporting him back to Earth as plain Richard Rider. I remember reading this issue as a kid and being really disappointed about Nova losing his powers. This was before all major comic events became super-temporary and it actually lasted for about 8 years until Nova re-appeared as part of the New Warriors. Spoiler Alert: Night Thrasher deduces that he still has his powers and drops him from a building. (This raises so many unanswered questions, but that's a discussion for another day.) I actually have the page from New Warriors #1 in my 90's gallery where Nova regains his powers, so check that out if interested. Sal Buscema drew several of the early Nova issues and it was great to see him revisit the character here. I also love the Sal/Sinnott combination as you can still see Sal's style, but Joe's inking makes everything look extra clean. This page also features Rom (of course since it's his comic), The "Champions of Xandar" - Queen Adora, Protector, Nova-Prime (aka Centurion), Comet and Powerhouse, along with some defeated Skrulls. The bottom right two panels are on vellum which has yellowed. I'm guessing it was drawn this way to help with the transportation effect. Social/Sharing |

I remember pulling this book out of a quarter bin in '86. It was my first exposure to Nova, and I thought he seemed like a cool character. I was so disappointed they took away his powers at the end. I love seeing an original page from an issue for which I'm pretty nostalgic. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Ted, that would be a trend I would not have a problem with my friend! In all seriousness, there is enough for us all - good luck in your collecting endeavors!
