Impressive Batman by Kaluta, who's able to create a classic dark/gothic image without totally blacken in ink a single square inch of the artboard!

Recognized Kaluta the moment I opened this.  There is no one else who does what he does.

There are two things about this piece that fascinate me most. First, the fact that 99% of the lines Kaluta laid down are vertical. Second, the masterful example of lighting, created strictly by varying the line weights. Brilliant!

Classic Kaluta layout with trademart Kaluta lines.  If you don't recognize this piece without the signature, you probably shouldn't be collecting art.

Batman rising in the dead of night
Take these batty wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for Mike Kaluta to arise

Batman fighting crime in the dead of night
Take these cowled eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be inked

Batman fly, Batman fly
Into the light of a dark black night

Key Batman, that ego, baby let that piece go

Oh I want to take you down to

Kaluta, I’ll fame it fast and take it in slow

That’s where I want to show…my Batman Kaluta

Marcus, look what you made me do! :)

What a great Kaluta example!  His usual attention to detail, super design, and unmistakable style, but extraordinary control of the composition.

This Batman character looks mighty cool.  They should make a movie or nine about him.  And a TV show where he dances.

It took me a moment looking at this, but totally get it now. Cat's Cradle Batman. Really awesome concept within the artistry. Taking me back to my early youth with this one.

A graceful beauty. This harkens back to the era of the great pulp illustrations. A perfect treatment for the subject matter. Batman has always been the best character for a retro feel.

Michael Kaluta is a genius.

I love this so much. Kaluta can draw everything well, but he always shines when he draws Batman. I wish he did more on the character as he is one of the best. You got a great one! Huge congrats!

I opened it! Crap, is the Riddler gonna kill me? I do know one thing that was killed, though...This cover! Fantastic work by Kaluta, and I love the balanced geometry of the image. And that line shadow is very cool. You found a winner. Congrats!

Some high graphic design sense to this one fo sho!  Great lighting effect, and the use of the almost exclusive vertical lines to render?!  Suh-weet, indeed.  Congrats, man!

Beautiful! I can't imagine owning a better Kaluta piece. While I have no problem identifying his work I'll confess he's a big hole in my comics knowledge so perhaps I'll have to fix that soon. Any recommendations where to start?

Kaluta didn't have long runs on any major titles for the big 2, but instead did cover art that was easily identifiable when they came out.  For interior art, The Shadow #1-4 for DC in 1973 is the one everyone recognizes as a great introduction to his work.

A phenomenal design layout.   The Batman heading are amazing.   As mentioned previously the vertical lines drive the composition.   The alignment of the Batman figures is classic.   Absolutely love this impressive masterpiece.

This wonderfully-designed Kaluta Batman cover with a wonderful design texpresse, at least to me, Batman's struggle between the obligation of his past to protect Gotham's citizens versus his regret not being able to live a normal life. Plus the piece has 60 comments - wow!
