Description

This is I believe my first commission or work in general over Tom Morgan. One of Tom's talents is his ability to adapt artist styles. I used to recognize his work in the 1990s with a Walter Simonson flair. Sometimes he'd do a retro cover ala contemporary Ron Frenz in the style of John Buscema, Jack Kirby or John Romita. As seen in this example, he's uncanny in his impression of Gene "The Dean" Colan and, when doing Marvel's version of Dracula, as published for a decade in Tomb of Dracula, rendering Vlad in Gene's style based after actor Jack Palance, is like magic. This job was a bit intimidating, even though I've previously inked an original Dracula by Colan. But that was a show or signing head & shoulders sketch with some background bats...this time it was on 11"X17" board and parts of the image were only implied in pencil so I would have to interpret in ink what was what. Trying to channel Tom Palmer, Gene's ToD embellishing partner, was not easy, even with the inspiration of having on hand the Marvel/IDW Gene Colan Tomb of Dracula Artist's Edition. Lastly I added a black border which helped anchor the image that was full of textures, light and contrasting shadows with few solid, spotted black areas. The new client Geoffrey Freeman was happy with the results and Tom himself said that my inks were "meaty". And to me that sounds like success. This experience was concluded April 28, 2020.
