Description
With a couple non-published Moon Knight posts last week I thought I’d keep it going on the non-published front with this HOT Hotz commission! Absolutely love it. What a way to check this ar-teest off the list, whew.

As with any commission, I definitely wanted to pick the right character to match the artist. We all know Kyle kills it on darker characters and imagery, so I was gonna go that route. That’s one. Two, in looking at his other commissions, a character he can potentially elaborate on in terms of the imagery outside of the figure. Like a potential background highlighting the “essence” of the character. Last, a character that he hasn’t drawn much, if at all. I think, all else being equal, artists get a little more revved up for those. When making the request he confirmed he’d drawn Brother Voodoo before, but not much, and that he thought the character was "great". DONE! Commission subject chosen :)

And yep…he straight killed it. All that I wanted and more. So much goodness packed into a 9x12 board, corner to corner. The figure itself is great, with the pose, the snakes…Kyle admitted he was channeling his very first appearance in the title page of Strange Tales #169 – see in the additional images. Basically Jericho’s original look here, but with the cape added, which Jericho got when he became the Sorcerer Supreme – Doctor Voodoo! And y’all know how Kyle draws capes, so yes, glad he made the add. At the top right Kyle said it’s Jericho’s astral form, and he added the touch of the skull on the face. You also could think of it as Jericho’s brother, Daniel, whose spirit he can summon and channel. Cool that it could be either/or :) And the bottom. Effigy, potion bottles, candles, symbols…he really went to town. And love the white haziness he added above the candles. Overall, some outstanding pure illustration throughout, with great detail and use of shadow.

Definitely one of those commissions that I think warrants cover treatment!

I'm no artist, but if I were, I think Brother Voodoo would be a blast to draw.  I love this character and, to be honest, am quite surprised that he's not the subject of more commissions.  I think he's a great visual character.  This piece is just sick!  Not sure if Kyle could have fit anything else in this image.  Love all the black, love all the melting candles and the voodoo doll at the bottom.  The figure and the costume are just spectacular, but all the other elements are equally mind blowing.   One of my favorite posts on CAF so far this year.  Big time congrats Kahlil.

I hear you, Eric.  Very unique in terms of the look and the nature of the character, which definitely makes for a nice commission subject, particularly when in the right hands.  Witness exhibit A :)  Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!  Always appreciated!

Oh ho, baby! I once had an old friend named Jim who played a mean guitar. He passed away a long time ago, but when I look at this beauty, I can still hear that sweet guitar sing!

I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time
I'll give it right back to ya one of this days
Ha-ha-ha

I said, I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time
I'll give it right back one of these days
Oh, yeah

If I don't meet you no more in this world
Then I, I'll meet ya on the next one
And don't be late
Don't be late

'Cause I'm a Brother Voodoo child, Brother Voodoo child
Lord knows I'm a Brother Voodoo child
Hey-hey-hey

Oh, yeah!  I remember that guy, Ruben!  He was actually an accomplished cook, too, and was known for whipping up a mean pot of Voodoo Chile!

Breathtaking piece here, K.  Brother Voodoo is one of my favorite character designs ever, and when they then added the Cloak of Levitation to the mix (during his FAR too short tenure as Earht's Sorcerer Supreme)...?  Even BETTER.  Love the fact that Mr. Hotz folded that in here.  Love how "big and bold" this is in that 70's "everything flying off the page at you" style, but the snakes in particular are wicked awesome.  They'd be right at home on a Molly Hatchet record or something.  Incredible inking on this fantasic piece.  Epic add, K!  ('Epicurean', even, in the case of the chili! :) ). Great score - congrats!

Thanks, Jason!  We're kindreds in terms of loving his design, and I KNOW you dig the cloak add - all too short but was fun seeing in Bendis's Avengers run.  One of your fave arcs, I know :)  Now that you mention it, I agree there is an in-your-face '70s vibe, but with Hotz's contemporary stylized spin!  Best of both worlds!

Superb crafted piece, especially for a commission in his classic Kelley-Jones-mixed-with-Wrightson-style ! Striking piece of this highly useless character (in my humble opinion), must be a creepy hammer in person :)

Voooood
Doooooo

When the art's in the crib ma
Post it like it's Hotz
Draw it like it's Hotz
Ink it like it's Hotz
When the mystic arts get at you
Potions like it's Hotz
Conjour like it's Hotz
Candles like it's Hotz
And if a Brother brings the attitude
Poses 'cuz it's Hotz
Darkness 'cuz it's Hotz
Mystic 'cuz it's Hotz
I got the cobras on my arm and the winning's forgone
And I roll the best spells 'cause I got it going on

Yep, he killed it dead. Brother Voodoo approves. Wow, this is stunning. He used lots of great tricks, too. Is that smudged white-out for the candle haze? Super clever. And that composition is perfect. Man, he goes on the list. This commission is fantastic, Kahlil. Congrats!

This is just awesome. I've tried twice now to get on Kyle's list, his work is just so impressive, but each time I've been just a few minutes too late - maybe the third time will be the charm when he opens up again. Great choice of character for him!

Agh!  Thanks, Nathan, and sorry you've missed out a couple times.  Stay diligent - you never know!  "Third time's a charm" is an expression that exists for a reason I assume :)  Easier said than done, I know - can't keep your eyes peeled on Instagram ALL the time!  Crossing my fingers for you, man!

Oh my stars and planets, yes, Kyle Hotz straight up killed this one.  It is pure awesomeness from top to bottom (especially the bottom, where he did such wonderful things with the candlelight and the plethora of rune symbols).  Those snakes are so cool too.  Everything is perfect on this one.  Wow wow wow !!!

Hotz may be the best horror comic book artist working today.  And if Marvel were smart, they should make an MCU horror movie starring Brother Voodoo.

We may see him in the next Doc Strange flick - there's some speculation.  I mean, if there was an in to get him on screen, that's it, I'd think.  There was a a deleted scene from the first Doc Strange flick, with his brother Daniel, referred to as "Master Drumm".  So we'll see!  Thanks for the add, Michael!
