DescriptionI must confess that, having grown up with the Silver Age renditions of Iron Man by such greats as Heck and Colan and even Ditko (though see the preceding artwork in this gallery), I am a little biased. While examples of such Silver Age artwork are now beyond my financial reach, I have been fortunate and privileged to own some examples. I am equally fortunate to have come across modern artwork that is not only affordable but also excellent (I always recall my mother's wise advice that one should not purchase something just because it is cheap and, I might add, if it is not something one actually likes). Such modern artwork (such as from series such as God Country and Step By Bloody Step) is nevertheless quite different. However, on occasion, one does encounter modern artwork on Silver Age heroes that is remarkable. This is one such piece. Featuring Shellhead in outer space battling a jazzed up Whiplash, this page somehow just brings (for me at least) everything together from an artistic standpoint - from the layouts as well as different perspectives to the detailed pencilling and wonderful (and equally intricate) inking (and spotting of blacks). For want of a better word, everything just hangs together so very well. Social/Sharing |

A grand display of Sean Chen's skills of storytelling and page design that flourishes with Iron Man battling his long time nemesis! The polished chrome metal surfaces against that incredible outer space backdrop are countered by the might of the lashing tendrils. Even with both masked, Chen is able to put so much charisma behind the mysterious man underneath the zippered leather mask that you would assume hosts a youtube channel about original art at night. Chen uses black border panels to blend in with the main highlight panel to create a larger more cohesive page for more of that great space drama.

This is , for all the reason you've cited in your description, a beautiful and top quality Iron Man page. In fact, there was a time when Chen was one of the hotter artists in the business/hobby and that time, not coincidentally, was while he was drawing this very Iron Man series!

Look at those inks!! Yowza! You are spot on in your description, Boston - an incredible page from a fantastic (and underrated) run. I can't get over the starfield background and all the energy flying around all over the place. Goreous delineations of everything, everywhere you look. I'm starstruck! Great add to you fantastic gallery - thanks for sharing!
