DescriptionFull disclosure: this piece has been floating around CAF for many years under the guise of "Warrior Woman." When I first saw it for sale in the classifieds I took a good long look and thought to myself "Yep, that is Lady Death if I've ever seen her, but ok sure she can be Warrior Woman." And thus it was relegated to my long and sundry want list for many years.Last month I saw it pop up on Heritage again listed as "Warrior Woman" and once again I think to myself "Yeah I bet Jim painted Lady Death and just never told anyone." I add it to my mile long watch list and go on with life. Once the live session starts and I quickly get outbid on piece after piece (I came up just a few dollars short of $96,000 needed to win the Exalibur #16 cover. Ok I was pretty much short the entire amount but who's counting) I decided to close the app and do some chores. Sometime late Sunday I get the notification this one is up for bidding. I toss in my max bid and wouldn't you know it "Warrior Woman" is coming home! Being the stubborn art collector that I am I just can't imagine Jim, who is a meticulous researcher and cataloger of art and everything else, would do a fairly detailed painting like this and just call her "Warrior Woman." Why not "Banshee Chick" or "Ferocious Ghoul Lass?" So I decide to go straight to the source (or as close as a mortal like myself can get) and reach out to Steve Morger about the provenance of this piece. And lo and behold Steve confirms it, this piece was done either as a full blown cover or prelim for a Chaos era Lady Death book that never materialized. I'm going to guess based on the costume it would have fallen around the time of The Gauntlet mini-series. So there you have it. No longer will this piece be dubbed "Warrior Woman", henceforth I shall bestow upon her the even more unique and prestigious title of Lady Death! That was probably more work than it was worth but I hope you had as much fun as I did. If not I'm sure there are a few $96000 pieces on CAF you can cleanse your palate with. Social/Sharing |

Nice change of pace to see a Silke subject with her clothes on. Love the gray and black tones here. And great work on the wrinkles and highlights of her boots. And of course those skulls!

Warrior Woman has all the fantastic Silke sophistication and sexiness to lead the armies of the dead. As Lady Death, the whole presentation carries even greater meaning that is more lasting.
