Description

Batman was too late and the bomb went off. So here lies Robin (Jason Todd) -- hushed, shattered amongst the rubble, and out of time.
This is the original and iconic cover featuring Batman's bloody sidekick for Part Three of the widely controversial, "A Death in the Family" story arc. It is considered one of the most important Batman stories for its brutal beating (and eventual demise) of Jason Todd, at the hands of Joker. Todd's murder would have a lasting effect on future Batman stories, since Batman's failure to save him sent the comic book mythos in a darker direction.
This issue was published when Batman was surging in popularity, and only three years after Frank Miller's futuristic Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, which had established the idea that Joker had killed Jason Todd (although Miller would go on to criticize this story calling it "The most cynical thing DC has ever done...").
In Batman #427, DC set up a 1-900 number hotline giving callers the ability to vote for or against Jason's death. The results of phone poll as to whether Robin dies or not was printed in this issue. The poll received a total of 10,614 votes with 5,343 voting for Todd's death over 5,271 for his survival...a small 72 votes changed Dark Knight lore, forever.
