DescriptionAll Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder #8 Variant Cover Original Art (DC, January 2008).
I committed to buy at Heroes 2019 and ended up getting it in hand after COVID swept the world. I had planned on videoing him retelling the story, but with cons suspended, finally asked if he would be willing to write a companion story for the piece, which Neal overdelivered in October 2021. I had hoped to print out the story, have him remarque and sign, and frame it with the cover. Alas, I will never get that chance. I have included his unabridged original writing below. David. TOP SECRET So, as to the integrated close-up of Joker and Batman as one picture. Thousands of fans have stared at and puzzled over this cover and how such an integration is possible. First, I have dealt with this problem for decades. First time as a Sunday page of the Ben Casey Sunday page. In time, the (Hey, a Jim Sterenko take down/off.) Over these times, I learned several lessons! One, in particular, gave the basic It’s like solving a Currier and Ives puzzle without a diagram, only worse. So…let’s try an opposite approach. One that makes no sense at all. Here is another very clear example. You’re at a 7 year old kid “sleeping over at a friends”! It’s dark. The room is filled by shadows, all new to you. You are spooked and perhaps terrified! Cracks grow across the room, further and further. And a coat’s hanging shadows become a wizard walking along the wall. None are real. They are a child’s imagination and real shadows. How do you use this?...elephants in clouds. This integration of shadow took about 6 minutes on my table, on white

Whoa, that is a genius way of integrating both of their heads overlaid on top of one another. Brilliant! Great acquisition, David!

Fantastic!! Even better to read about how he did it. Not nearly as complicated as I would have guessed. Congrats David!

I love this art and the story makes it infinitely more interesting. Congrats on having this in your collection - it obviously means a lot to be its caretaker. Thanks as well for sharing the back story - very fascinating.

This is Neal's most memorable cover of this modern era. It showed that he still had the spark of imagination and and courage to try something new instead of resting on his laurels. Adams' creativity still inspires and will forever do so for artists and many of their fans who recognize how influential he has been thoughout all artistic landscapes.

This always looked interesting for the merged images of Joker and Batman. For some reason, I remember reading that perspective with a water bottle helped inspire this piece (or maybe it was an explanation for how the idea works). In any case, it's great that you got to converse with Neal about the inspiration for the piece. Congrats, David!

Cool juxtaposition of Joker and Bats! What an amusing visual puzzle Neal Adams created for us fans. Neal was one of the true Masters of Comic Art and I, for one, am enamored of his work even today. Congrats on owning a really special example of his work!
