DescriptionI have made it no secret that my favorite story line from Terry and the Pirates is from Jan 1, 1939 until the fall of 1939. Here is a fun daily important in that story line. After becoming smitten with the young April Kane as Terry's first love, he is so distraught over his inability to dance that he decides to leave Hong Kong forever. He has written April a note saying he is leaving and that he can not attend the ball with her. In this daily we see him packing up his thing including the letter and heading out. Meanwhile, a caped figure is being pursued by thugs and is shot. Terry ends up helping this unknown person who turns out to be the Dragon Lady. Yes, that last panel is the Dragon Lady fleeing. Terry helps a wounded Dragon Lady and nurses her back to health and in return she teaches him how to dance and about the wiles of the opposite sex. The story is pure magic and Caniff at his best.Social/Sharing |

Who knows what evil lurks i nthe hearts of men? The Dragon Lady knows! Hah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Boy, old Caniff sure pulled a fast one on the readers by not even drawing the Dragon Lady even remotely feminine looking in that panel!

Swing dancing was popular in 1939. Did he want to learn the Lindy Hop, Balboa, St. Louis Shag, of the Jitterbug? Or was "dancing" just the code word for "snu snu"?

Wonderful art.
The last two panels are sheer magic.
(And appreciate the terrific write up Jeff!)

Glad you grabbed that one!! It's a great story and a great example of where Caniff was going with his use of light and shadow.

Love the use of shadows here. Some thoughtful panels and a burst of action at the end
