DescriptionPublished 1960."The Creature in the Glass Ball" written by Arnold Drake Twice-up end page from the Space Ranger story. In the fifties, DC created some science fiction heroes to augment their super-hero line up. These include Captain Comet, Adam Strange, Tommy Tomorrow, Space Cabby, Atomic Knights, Star Rovers and Space Ranger. Being a big science fiction fan, I used to comb back issue bins looking for readers copies of these comics so I could read the stories. Space Ranger was my favorite. Along with his girlfriend Myra Mason and his plucky alien shape-shifting sidekick Cryll, he patrolled the Solar System battling space pirates. alien invaders and other threats. Space Ranger was created by Edmond Hamilton, Gardner Fox and Bob Brown. It is possible that the SF novel David Starr, Space Ranger by Isaac Asimov may have been the inspiration for Space Ranger. The first Space Ranger story was published in Showcase #15 in 1958. After Showcase, subsequent stories were published in Tales of the Unexpected and Mystery in Space. Some of the Space Ranger stories were reprinted in the DC Super Stars of Space in the seventies, an anthology Mysteries in Space in 1980 and the Showcase Presents Showcase trade paperback in 2012. But many of the stories including this one have not been reprinted. I have long wanted a Space Ranger page and was able to acquire this one recently. And it has Space Ranger, Myra and Cryll on it! Got my intro to the the DC SF characters through DC Super-Stars "of Space" reprint issues and my fondness for them continued through the years. Very cool to see an original page from when Space Ranger first appeared especially with main characters depicted in all the panels.

This is a nice looking page that pretty much tells us the entire story in an abridged format. Bob Brown is one of those unsung artists that worked on various titles for DC and Marvel.

Congrats on finally getting a Space Ranger page! This has to be so much fun for a Science Fiction an comic book fan. I can't help but see a little bit of Don Heck in here, especially the woman's face in the first panel. Fun!
