Description

Written by Vansant. Published January 2001.

"Tanks at Taejon. On July 10, the first American tanks were thrown into the fight. M-24 Chaffee light tanks of the 78th Tank Battalion faced T-34s at the town of Chonui...The light tanks, with their 75mm cannons and thin armor, were no match for the Russian built T-34s. Again, American equipment was outmatched by the NKPA." (North Korean Peoples Army)

Panel 1: On that same day, July 10, the U.S. Air Force finally came through with meaningful help for the infantry. A group of F-80 Shooting Stars spotted a juicy target: a long column of NKPA tanks and trucks. It shot them to pieces.

Panel 2: Commanding General of the 24th Division, Bill Dean, knew what the key real estate was. He was going to make an all-out effort to hold it. Panel 3: By now, Dean's men had the new 3.5-inch bazooka, which gave them a fighting chance against the Russian-made T-34s.

Panel 4: As June wore on, the seasonal rains stopped and the Korean summer became hot and jungle humid. Daylight last sixteen hours, from 5:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Panel 5: On July 14, the NKPA mounted a powerful assault across the Kum River...The Battle for Taejon had begun.
