Description
As a ten-year-old I found the Grey Gargoyle simultaneously fascinating and terrifying. How can one fight someone whose touch is death?

As I recall, at some point the Gargoyle even nails Thor, turning him to stone. If memory serves, only by falling over and having Mjolnir strike the pavement does Thor save his bacon by transforming into Donald Blake.

Though there is no Thor on this page, there is still some cool, grey magic in each panel by Kirby and Stone. Thanks to Bechara of Nostalgic Investments!

What a great pick-up!  Recent auctions have showcased the magic of the Kirby/Stone art team.  This is a superior example of their storytelling, and a nice self-contained vignette at that.  Big congrats Mark!

A lovely page Mark. Chic Stone's in king on Jack was lovely and lush with Thor; his brush work was beautifully fluent and varied in weight.

Very nice Kirby page building the drama up with Blake on the ropes!  Grey Gargoyle is built up to be a credible threat when his power is showcased by the Kirby / Stone action sequence where you can feel the peril!

There we go! Beautiful pick-up! Grey Gargoyle was always one of my favorites too...later appearances in Avengers showed how lethal his powers could be...a worthy opponent for Thor!

Flawlessly executed Kirby hyper-drama + juicy, potent Stone brushwork = peak comics!

You're so right, the Grey Gargoyle is a pretty wild and disturbing villain if you think about it!  So much to love about this page, of course the beautifuly Kirby/Stone art--but also Stan was really laying it on thick here!  Don telling Jane to obey him is funny enough, but that fifth panel is so great: GG calling Don feeble and the whole discussion about how awesome he is because he's turning a book to stone.  Charming Marvel magic!

Great Kirby/Stone page! I love how they are able to make the simple action of throwing a book at a villain dramatic! No Thor, no hammer, just Don Black and a book--But it's awesome!

The King! With or without Thor, this is a barnstormer of a page. Kirby's foregrounding of the flying book in the fourth panel makes it seem momentarily as if it could be a useful weapon - but only in the hands of the Grey Gargoyle. (I agree, GG scared me as a kid too.)

A wonderful page by the King, with nice Stone inks.  Great portrayal of the Grey Gargoyle.
