So, this is a longwinded story. Somewhere around 2016 i bought what was the first finished pen&ink (1972) cover to House Of Secrets #99, The cover concept was about a demon being brought - or escaping - into reality via comic artist's drawing board. Joe Orlando REJECTED Kaluta's take on this concept, and asked him to do something more "M C Esher-ish", which resulted in inverting the concept to the demon's clawed hand holding a crystal ball with the artist and his studio trapped within [pic 4 below]...............................When i got the piece, it was framed with a shaped matte [pic 1 below], but as it was hung for decades with plain glass in the frame and NOT UV PROTECTIVE, the exposed areas yellowed [pic 2 below] while the matted areas remained white. I definitely did not want to display it with that matte, and yet i also did not want to have the awful yellowing shape as part of what one sees........................SO, I hit upon the idea of creating a stat mask of the HoS 99 cover, and precisely cutting out the area of the actual art, so it would tell its own story of 'being so fantastic a piece that even the cover couldn't contain it' [pic 3 below]. I then took the original art, and the mask for reference, to Michael in 2017, asking him to leave the studio area relatively unpainted, but to fully color the demon, thus emphasizing his escape into reality from the fiction of the comic artist studio, and even the confines of the cover.
