Description
Late Reed Crandall work from Creepy #54, 1973. As you can see from the aux pic, which is of the page as printed in Creepy, Bill Dubay once again took it on himself to re-write text and dialogue AFTER a story had been turned in, in this case ruining a much more subtle Don McGregor script - and stepping all over Crandall's finished art. (I removed all the Dubay re-write balloons and store them on the back of the frame). .........................................

Dubay did a lot of this story-wrecking - either he had an unwieldy ego, was piling on billable hours, or both - during his three periods of employment with Warren. The last time around, Jim Warren gave him his own title, 1984 (later 1994), created in an effort to compete with Heavy Metal, wherein DuBay right away pissed off artist/writer comic grandmasters Wally Wood and Richard Corben – to the degree that they vehemently swore never to work for Warren again. He altered Strnad’s dialogue to include words and phrases that Strnad has called “a spew of juvenile obscenities” for the first appearance of Corben and Jan Strnad’s graphic novel Mutant World (serialized in issues # 1-8) after it was sent in finished. (The original unexpurgated version saw the light of day as a stand-alone graphic novel four years later in 1982.) As for Wood, he eviscerated/butchered the 12-page Wizard King-related Wood story 'The End', again after it was sent in finished, into two unrelated re-written 6-page stories 'Quick Cut' and 'One Night Down On The Funny Farm'.........................Image area 12.5x18"
